Morrissey nominated for South Bank Show Award

According to an article in today’s Times, Morrissey has been nominated for a South Bank Show Award. The South Bank Show has been UK TV’s leading arts show for some time; The Smiths were, of course, featured in 1987.

The awards ceremony will be held on January 27th and is usually televised nationally. Moz may be tempted to put in an appearance, given some of the other nominees.

“The South Bank Show panel has nominated some splendidly eclectic shortlists for the awards this year, with names and productions from ten disciplines: from theatre to dance and opera to television drama — from Alan Bennett’s The History Boys to choreographer Wayne MacGregor, from Opera North to Coronation Street.

The films nominated are My Summer of Love, Dead Man’s Shoes and Shaun of the Dead; classical music is represented by Harrison Birtwistle, Stephen Hough and Daniel Hope; and the Libertines, Franz Ferdinand and Morrissey battle in the name of pop.

The other categories are comedy, literature and the visual arts.”

Who the hell has heard of The South Bank Show and who cares? Maybe next he will be nominated for the Melon Heap award and then we can get excited.

I'm not in the business of knocking award shows that i've never heard of before they nominate Morrissey for something, but all i'll say is that hopefully their trophies aren't made of solid milk chocolate under gold foil. If he wins, at least he'll be able to replace the 'Q' trophy which undoubtedly melted in the backseat of his Jag. Morrissey is feeling better these days, so maybe he'll be able to say more than one word during his acceptance speech, or else he might have another pissed off editor yapping at his ankles.

One word of advice for South Bank: I don't know who you people are, but its cool that you want to honor our man Moz. But if all he wants to say is 'thanks', 'regards', or 'erm' during his speech, accept it and move on or else he may put you on his 'ignored' list.

The south Bank show is a very well known and respected TV programme in England, well and I would go as far as to say, one of the best when it comes to discuss arts, politics and religion. It is hard to believe you have never heard of it, but then again maybe you're not based in the UK in which case it is understandable, but then again you shoud not dismiss something you don't know.

Moz is in very good company here. Dead Man's Shoes was undoubtedly the best film of 2004. It is one of the most powerful films I have ever seen. 2004 has been a great year for Moz but I cant help feeling he has better work yet to produce. You Are The Quarry was good but no more than good. Some great songs but some fillers too - e.g. I'm Not Sorry, the word banal springs to mind. Moz has still got a No.1 single in him for sure.
