Three Days With MORRISSEY

To preface this story about the last 3 days I would like to say that I am in no way bragging, I am simply explaining an amazing list of events that happened to me while at the two L.A. Shows and the Vegas shows otherwise unfortunately known as the last 3 US dates.

Night 1 (photo1, photo2 - photos by Adam Latham)

I left San Francisco bright and early for L.A. On November 11th Thursday to see both shows with average Tickets in the Orchestra section. And this is where the surreal twist of events begins...

As I get on line at Universal I meet David, Nancy, and Marco. Marco says he has an extra floor ticket for each night, thank you Marco! So we continue to wait on line until the giant barn-door type metal gate opens and the stampede to get to the security line begins. I take off like an olympian sprinter, like I'm running from a fire or a mad dog, (sorry if I passed anyone). So I manage to get up to the stage in the middle. After a few songs Morrissey reaches out to all of us but instead of just extending my hand I waved my finger as to scold him and that must have caught his eye so he went for my hand. His hand is the softest hand I have ever touched. I've heard people say this before and it's true. It is like a big baby's hand. For song #12 "Now My Heart is Full" he was counting how many friends he had on his fingers, I held up 3 fingers and shrugged my shoulders as to say, "I only have 3 friends" and he looked at me and made a frown and shrugged HIS shoulders as to say "yeah, I know what you mean". So I left that night in a heavenly state. It was calming actually to know he connected with me in some way.

Night 2
So while getting dressed for the second night at the Amphitheater I contemplated wearing a black shirt that my friend Mary made for me, but then at the last minute I thought? Hmmmm, maybe I'll wear the same thing, another white T-shirt. Then if he sees me he may remember me I thought? So I exercised a little decisiveness and stuck with the same kind of white T-shirt. I awoke and went to the line a bit earlier this day and we hung out on the benches until once again the infamous Barn Door metal gate thing that lead into the Amphitheater area were opened. There was no running allowed now, which was nice for those of us up front, but once through security everyone scurried for one of 12 doors with hopes that their door will open first and they would run down the wide shallow stairs to get a spot at the barrier. It was a bazaar set-up to say the least. It was one anxiety attack after another. First the line, then the other line, the the running, then the security check point (I think if they found a camera on you they'd shoot you), then more running to one of 12 mystery doors, then the stairs where you had to duck and weave security guards telling you not to run and then finally the blessed barrier. And through some twist of fate I would up getting the exact same spot right in the middle on the barrier.

So the show begins and after a few songs he sings "I'm playing Easy To Get" a truly beautiful song about L.A. When he finishes he asks the audience if we knew what that song was about? I yell out a pathetic attempt at an answer, and he makes fun of it by doing that squeaky "making fun of you" voice he does. I was crushed, what an idiot I was, then he looks at me and says, "You wore that shirt last night", I try to explain but to no avail, he then says, "at least I had mine dry-cleaned". Referring to the Priest shirt he wore the night before as well. I was glowing at this point. Then a bit later, some where around "Jesus" I think, I tried to give him my letter. On the out side of the letter I made a joke about my lame ass drawing and a Chuck Close reference. He signaled to throw it because the crowd was starting to really get crazy, I threw it and he put it in his pocket. Whew! Then "The More You Ignore Me" starts, he has on a light blue Brioni shirt. How do I know what the label is? Because he threw it straight up over our heads and I reached up and got it! It would not rip and after the security freaked out on us I put it in my pants and hugged a bunch of people and split. It smells just like the Myrrh, the incense the Priests in Church would have in those smoking Myrrh holders on the chains that they'd walk the isle with. My entire room smelled of it, so amazing! And this is how day 2 ended.

Night 3
So I wake up for the show in Vegas. I decide that if I wore the same shirt again he would simply think of me as a dirt bag, he'd throw me a bar of soap or simply never look my way again. So I got dressed up a bit in a black suit. Then I tore a piece off the back of the Brioni shirt from the night before and handed out about 30 little pieces to people on line in Vegas. Thank you all so much for letting me on line with you guys, I will never forget it.

I figured if I could just get in there somewhere near that same spot against the barrier maybe he'd look and read my sign that read "I CHANGED MY SHIRT" and remember who I was? Well I didn't get the same exact spot but did manage to get to the barrier at stage left. So right after the first song "Shakespeare's Sister" he starts to walk over to our side and I hold up my sign, "I CHANGED MY SHIRT"...he looks and looks closer, puts his hand above his eyes to block the light and then smiles, then he says "Craig?". Did he just...what the...He said my name? I paused, NOT like an animal caught in head lights but more like...well like some one that just heard MOZ say their name for fucks sake! Holy ##### I thought! He must have read my letter last night, there is no other way he'd know my name.

Then a few songs later, not knowing that I already got his shirt the night before, he took off his shirt and literally threw it right in my face! He looked at me and threw it right in my damn face. I didn't want to be greedy so I let the people behind me rip it apart, and believe me they did! The one kid had my tie and pulled me to the ground almost, I yelled "THAT'S MY TIE, THAT'S MY TIE" finally he let go and apologized, he was a nice guy just trying to get the shirt for his girl. Then one of Morrissey's 2 security guards "Mozzer's Men" asked me why I did that? He said, "He gave that to YOU!" but I explained that I already had one. Then I took my black GUCCI tie, (got it cheap!) and threw it up on stage. The lights came on, no third encore, and guys started cleaning the stage. As the stage was being cleaned I saw a guy grab the tie and put it on the pile of gifts for Morrissey to perhaps get later? Then as with the previous two nights the Frank Sinatra song "My Way" came on. I've heard it each night as we walked out but on this night the words seamed to register more with me...

"And now, the end is near;
And so I face the final curtain.
My friend, I'll say it clear,
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain.

I've lived a life that's full.
I've traveled each and ev'ry highway;
But more, much more than this,
I did it my way...

THE END

So it says 212! I should have just let him leave a message but I answered it like an idiot, “hello this is Craig”, whoever it was just didn’t say a word for about 8 seconds and then hung up. I called the number back and it is the **** **** [hotel details removed at request of poster - DT Nov. 17, 2004 12:20am PST] Hotel, a luxury hotel in NY. You completely utter selfish numpty. I know I am only reiterating a few earlier comments, but you had to blurt this out and could not hold your piss. If Moz did call you, then do you think he would be happy about this being posted? Is he going to be inclined to do it again for another lucky individual? I wonder, had he left a message, would you have converted his message to MP3 and posted it to further your ego?

                                        Christ you even had me agreeing with a post by Quentin 4forks sake!
