Jobriath gaily described himself as "the true fairy of rock 'n' roll" but the truth is that at that time, even in the wilder reaches of the music business, being an out and proud homosexual was unallowed. David Bowie, Marc Bolan and Elton John were all hitting the big time in 1973. Despite an undeniable flamboyance (read: queerness) the three of them hemmed and hawed about the true nature of their sexuality in order to court success from a homophobic public. Perhaps Jobriath too would have survived as an entertainer had he been prepared to closet himself...
