Johnny Marr riff sampled for live version of "Meat Is Murder"?

I met a guy at Reading festival who'd been one of the sound crew for Morrissey and also on the 2002 tour, he told me that for "Meat is Murder" they'd sampled Johnny Marr's riff from the version he'd played at the Linda McCartney tribute concert a couple of years ago and used it in several concerts which Morrissey was apparently very pleased with.

      Sorry if this question shows a staggering lack of even the most basic technical knowledge; but why would they have to sample a riff for live performance anyway?
      The cattle noises, sure, but guitar parts? What am I missing?

      I have seen Johnny play many times since the break-up of The Smiths, primarily seeing 'The The' and 'The Healers'.

      I have never heard him even refer to the Smiths let alone do a song.

      I remember watching the Linda McCartney concert and really enjoying Johnny's version of Meat is Murder. Amid the dross of the other performers it sounded awesome. In fact, when I heard Moz perform it live during the Oye Esteban tour, I didn't think it was as good as Johnny's version!

      I don't remember him changing the words though. Does anyone know which lyrics he altered?

      Marr played in Auckland-New Zealand with Neil Finn a year or so ago . During this show Marr said "Anyone feel depressed?" then played "There is a light that never goes out"
      He sang the lyrics as well as playing guitar and it is a good version-not as good as the current Moz version though ;)

          When it comes to sampling, I'm surprised the recent live version of How Soon Is Now? hasn't been discussed. Surely the bulk of the guitar sound is being played off a tape? Any guitarists who have seen a recent show care to spill any light because people I spoke to at Blackpool seemed to think it was quite clearly recorded.

          Not that it matters because it sounds fantastic.

          This may very well be....the fact is that although Moz couldn't have sampled directly from the record, he could have taken a recording from the benefit concert which was a public news event. These are the same rules as photo-journalists use. I think it's kind of funny given that Meat is Murder isn't a terribly difficult song to replicate.

            I remember Johhny's version. It wasn't bad at all but his vocals weren't great but his solo at the end made up for it!

              the intros to both the 1999/2000 and the 2002 versions were played by A Whyte on his glittery silver Danelectro, using open tuning.

              nobody would even think for one second that J Marr isn't a great guitarist, but the Meat Is Murder intro is hardly the most difficult riff he's ever come up with... (try Girl Afraid!)
