"FOTGTD" live track for sale

Sanctuary is offering an internet only live version of 'The First of the Gang to Die' recorded in Manchester at the M.E.N. on May 22, 2004 and is used on the singles' video (official site news item - Live version of "First of the Gang To Die" available now!). To purchase an exclusive live version download of 'First Of The Gang To Die', visit this link. According to Sanctuary, the live version is otherwise unavailable to buy as an audio track.

- The site lists the price as 99p and accepts credit cards and Paypal. It's great that they're providing fans with well recorded live version of the current single, but to charge for it? Seems gratuitous to me.

Glad to have the track though,

Don't get me wrong, I respect your right to post them, and I myself have been very critical of much of the new material because I genuinely believe it's not his best. But I stick with him because he has created so much, musically, that I love - Smiths output, Arsenal, Vauxhall. If you really think that he has "become everything [you] despise" then why not just cease buying his records, reading his interviews and coming to his fansite. If he's a sell-out, well, abandon him, find another artist to support. It really is that simple. Some people posting on this thread seem to genuinely HATE him now - ok, fair enough. I'm as disappointed as the next fan with his new music. In fact I haven't been fully satisfied since Vauxhall, which I still regard as a fabulous record. I wish he'd get back to making music of that quality. But despise him I certainly don't. And if you do genuinely despise him or what he has become, a fan site is the wrong place to be - constructive criticism yes, hatred no. If you love The Smiths but loathe what Moz is now, go to Johnny Marr's website - I love Johnny Marr as much as any Smiths fan, and he's not doing any of the things you accuse Moz of. So that's fair enough. As to the actual issue of the downloads, Sanctuary will have a big hand in this. They're not doing anything different to many other bands in selling these live recordings. I really don't think it's quite the satanic act some of you seem to think it is. Furthermore, 'Paint A Vulgar Picture', great track though it is, ceased to be a record of Moz's approach to the music industry long ago. Reissue, repackage anyone? By 1990 or so he'd started that game! The only thing I wish is that he'd make truly great music again.

I can't believe the fuss that's being made over a live download. It's utterly pathetic. Pray tell, why has Moz sold out? Please explain, cos I don't see it. Let's consider the evidence.

                          1. Live streaming of tracks is simply a common way of transmitting music now. Loads of bands, indie or otherwise, do this. Why is Moz forbidden from doing thus?

                          2. Moz has not sold out in terms of his live shows. He's playing with the same band as he was before the 'comeback'. He's gone to Glastonbury and played the least crowd-pleasing set in its history. He's appeared on television and been the least co-operative interviewee possible. I mean, he's hardly become the king of the talk shows has he.

                          3. He doesn't appear at celebrity bashes or on celebrity-related television. He collected his MOJO Icon award then scarpered before lunch was even served.

                          4. Lyrically, he's not on top form at the moment, but he hasn't sold out - as far as I can see no-one else is writing about "uniformed whores" or any of the other lyrical concerns he has (whether these concerns are good or bad is a separate issue).

                          5. Musically - again - not his best album but Alain and Boz aren't playing any differently that they were 7 years ago (this may be the problem!). Jerry Finn is a bit of a compromise, I admit, but doesn't intervene THAT much other than to give the record polish.

                          6. What's this nonsense about "need another Jag Moz?". How pathetic. The jag he already has was bought from the money he earned from Smiths and solo royalties BEFORE this comeback. Note those words - HE EARNED this money. (and don't bother with the 'he's greedy and fleeced Mike Joyce' argument, the point is he deserves a good portion of his fortune for his part in the Moz/Marr songwriting partnership). It's up to him how he spends it. Wouldn't mind a Jag myself, and most people are lying if they say they wouldn't get themselves a few nice things if they had the money. Don't be hypocrites. He doesn't flaunt his wealth to the public. Only the fans will have seen 'The Importance Of Being Morrissey'.

                          7. His lifestyle in LA is low-key. C'mon guys, he only went there to confound Mike Joyce! He's not part of the 'LA set' or we'd have heard of it. By comparison to many top celebrities he lives rather modestly. Nice house, sure, but, as we saw from the documentary, stamped with his personality. He hasn't started filling his living room with gaudy chandeliers.

You want sell-out? Let me tell you what that REALLY is. NME recently reported, with quotes from Brian May and Roger Taylor, that they intend to tour with a variety of singers (George Michael, Robbie Williams, Elton John) AS QUEEN. Now that's fucking sell-out, man. Making adverts with Britney and Beyonce dressed in a toga. That's sell-out. Moz doesn't even APPROACH this kind of thing. At worst, he's sought a few new fans and begun to use some of the newer ways of putting out his material. Big fat deal. Give him a break.
