In Salt Lake City (where I find myself) we used to have a great New Wave/Modern/Alternative radio station that played stuff you didn't hear anywhere else - it truly was alternative. They played obscure bands like the Smiths, Depeche Mode, The Cure - all big names now, but then it was "fag" music. My friends and I were always thought to be weird because we didn't listen to Poison and Van Halen.
Then Nirvana comes along and yanks the alternative genre into everybody's consciousness, and suddenly alternative was the cool thing. Any band that sounded like Nirvana was pushed as alternative. Now we end up with bands like Matchbox 20 and Three Doors Down as alternative???
Now everything on the radio blends together and there is nothing that knocks you down and forces you to listen like the Pixies, the Trash Can Sinatras, Echo & the Bunnymen.
I can still remember the moments when I first heard Panic or Only Tongue Can Tell, but I can't name one Hoobastank song even though I hear them all the time.
I'm sure there's good music out there, but where do you find it now???
