Bowing at No. 11 with "You Are the Quarry" (Attack/Sanctuary), Morrissey not only scores the highest position of his solo career but also beats out any chart placement he had with the Smiths. The set sold 56,000 copies in its first week, far exceeding 1997's "Maladjusted" (Mercury), which opened with just 19,000 and a No. 61 perch; the set has sold 87,000 to date.

[the below items] are from the HITS Magazine charts, which nobody in the industry really looks at. The Billboard chart is based off of the Soundscan numbers. Also, what was written was not true - YATQ this week has not beaten his previous best week ever by 15,000.

Based on scanned sales throughout the US, the album sold 54,817 copies during the first week of sales. This does not include sales from stores that don't operate on the Soundscan system.

Morrissey had predicted sales of 50,000 for his first week sales in America. He ended up at the 10th slot with 54,817 records sold. He beat out Lenny Kravitz and George Michael who also released records on May 18th.

        Does anyone have any information on how other British acts have done in the US album charts in recent years? Robbie Williams, Sting, George Michael? I'm assuming someone like Robbie Williams hasn't been within a mile of the US top ten.

        good sales but there is one reason. Morrissey has a loyal fanbase, we all buy the album during the week of release (some of us in different format). The sales will fall next week. It's what happened with the single in uk...

        I was thinking that this is even more impressive considering Morrissey is not a household name is the US like here in the UK.

        Perhaps curiosity will tempt more people to buy his album. And damn, did anyone else notice that he needs only about 1,000 more albums for #10?!?!

          Good job. Now if you want "Quarry" to really blow up on the charts....please, please, please release "The First of the Gang to Die" soon AND film a high budget, concept video for it. The lyrics to the song are just begging for a really cool, action packed video to be filmed in East LA. I don't really care about videos, but the kids do and this song would make a cool one. Do it and you will really shift some units. Plus the song WILL be a hit on radio too.

The only album on the whole list, besides morrissey, of course, that i would buy would be the shrek soundtrack. new found glory sold more copies? what the fuck is that about? in a month or so no one will even give a fuck about them!

                    Jesus Christ, Look @ all of these other crap albums that are in the top 10, I mean, a freakin' Soundtrack is in the TOP TEN as if it were an ALBUM!?! This is probably why I never look at these things, but it is great to see a TRULY GREAT ALBUM piercing the charts, and giving some decent name to the TOP charts. Just goes to show you how TRUE fans make the difference. Nice to know i am one of 50,000 people left that actually LISTEN to Musik. ViVA LA MORRISSEY.

                          Given that many Mozheads (rightfully) buy their music at independent record shops (Amoeba, etc.) that do not link to Soundscan, the real 1st week number is probably at least 10% higher. Throw in the online sales numbers too. I wonder what kind of deal he negotiated with Sanctuary. He could be getting as much as $4-5 an album or as little as $0.85 an album.

                                        This is great news! I've had the cd for a week now and I love it. I may sound crazy but this CD is equal to 'Viva Hate' and YES I was a fan when 'Viva Hate' was first issued. I also think 'I Like You' should be the third single off the cd. It's the only song that has a chance of getting real air time in America. It would also be another top ten hit in England. 'Let Me Kiss You' should be the 4th single.
