Billy Bragg on Morrissey...again!

I went along to see Billy Bragg at Edinburgh's Usher Hall tonight.

Prior to the gig Bragg undertook a public interview with a very odd woman who asked him quesitons about his dog before allowing questions from the floor...

I was first up and asked the following...

TYM: Billy, it has been reported on the internet that during this tour you have been speaking with some affection and a little humour about Morrissey...I wondered if, as both you and he are peculiarly "English" artists, your voices, your frame of reference, if you had an opinion on Morrisseys alleged racism and the importance of "Englishness" in your works?

BB: Well, I think the problem for Morrissey when he was going through his wrapping himself up in the Union Jack phase was that he didn't explain himself properly, I mean you can't just throw out a song like the National Front Disco without explaining it...it's trick to be ambiguous about these things.

Billy then flung himself into a lengthy diatribe about nationalism, particularly English nationalism, before concluding...

BB: But I don't have any doubt that Morrissey, and Joe Strummer if he were still with us, would join any front against racism, in his own strange way.

Bragg also sang a few lines from Reel Around the Fountain and told a very amusing story about Morrissey, Thomas the Tank Engine and Jimmy Sommerville!

Another post on BB's anecdotes of Morrissey. Is he in love with him? And enough with the Jimmy Sommerville business. I can't cope!
