Blink-182's Travis Barker was asked to play the drums on You Are The Quarry

Blink-182's drummer Travis Barker was asked to play drums on You Are The Quarry.

A journalist friend of mine interviewed Travis Barker for the Swedish newspaper Expressens entertainment edition and since my friend is a huge fan of Moz they of course talked about Morrissey. I forced him to write down what Travis said on the interview tape (the article isn't out yet and will probably not include the section about Morrissey due to space limitations).

Here goes:

Your producer Jerry Finn is working on the new Morrissey album. Have you heard anything about that?
- I was actually supposed to have played drums on the Morrissey album! They asked me if I'd come down and check it out but I was having a baby at the time so I didn't do it in the end. But I heard that everything is going well with the album.
- Mark in our band talks to Jerry a lot and Jerry told him that everything is going absolutely amazing with the Morrissey album. When we were working on the Blink record Jerry heard some of the new Morrissey material and it was SOOO good! I haven't heard it myself but Jerry says it's just amazing, so I'm really excited. Jerry is pretty on most of the time and has very good taste, you know? so I reckon it'll be good.

Who's idea was it for you to play the drums on the Morrissey record?
- Morrissey's manager asked me actually and that was a fucking honour I tell you!
Are you a fan of Morrissey's music?
- Not really a huge fan, but I'm familiar with his music and I listened a lot to The Smiths when I was in high school.

Note: Travis must have been approached to play the drums around the time Spike T Smith was kicked off the sessions and Dean Butterworth replaced him. According to Travis, his son is three and a half months old, so his story makes sense that way. As said, the article isn't out but the link to the newspaper is http://www.expressen.se

that's more like it! the only previous comment we had from Jerry was that the recordings were 'great' which I thought was a disappointing choice of superlative!

as good as i'm sure blink-182's drummer is, isn't morrissey's pedigree watered down enough? all this talk about jerry finn and travis barker is infuriating. the reason why the smiths were so strong was because they kept it in the family. next thing you know, he's going to pull a liz phair and take on the matrix. this isn't trolling, it's just disappointment talking.

i rarely respond to anonymous comments, because frankly anonymous comments don’t count, but here goes. i never said anything about jerry finn or travis barker's accomplishments. i'm sure what they do is fine in their respective genres. from what i've seen from barker, yes, he is a very good technical drummer and better than most in the pop-punk world. he might have been a nice fit for "southpaw grammar."

i’ll give you that barker is better than spike smith and dean butterworth though – two drummers in my opinion that are beyond critisim. butterworth uses the same drumsticks due to the fact that he’s never hit his snare harder than a baby tap and spike has yet to figure out where a drum fill goes. but to say barker is better than spencer cobrin is ridiculous. they’re two different kinds of drummers. apples and oranges.

but if you can explain to me how barker is better than cobrin, please do so – i’m very curious as to your thought process on the matter. people always say "person a" is better than "person b" but never back it up. prove me wrong.

but i digress. have you heard the new songs? yes, i'm sure you have. they're not what you'd call rockers, are they? "mexico?" first of the gang?" "crashing bores?" "i like you?" these songs require finesse, something i don't have confidence in jerry finn having. hopefully finn’s job is more of a knob turner and a button presser than a hands-on producer.

like i said, i don’t doubt his talents – he probably makes a great commercial pop-punk record, i’m just stating that there comes a point where one has to question some of the people involved in this recording session.

by the way, since you bring up the wide array of “accomplishments” of finn and barker, here they are…

            jerry finn:
            blink-182
            afi
            bad religion
            color me badd
            goo goo dolls
            green day
            sum 41
            alvin and the chipmunks
            pennywise

            barker:
            blink-182
            pink
            transplants
            black eyed peas

i’m sorry, but i am not impressed with what they’ve “accomplished in their careers.”

steve lilywhite on the other hand, who you refer to as a “substandard producer,” besides producing “vauxhall and i,” the “sunny” and “boxers” eps, “viva hate,” and “southpaw grammar,” has worked with:

            happy mondays
            kirsty maccoll
            xtc
            the la’s
            the pogues
            the chameleons uk
            talking heads
            steel pulse
            johnny thunders
            bruce foxton of the jam
and oh yeah sorry for digging up the terrible past, but the smiths.

by the way, do you actually like any morrissey album? by this statement: “[morrissey] has never had a lights-out producer or rhythm section and that is just the plain truth,” is sounds like you’ve never been happy with anything he’s put out. do i really have to bring mick ronson into this too?

This news article is incredible and very hopeful. I wonder if other people here are thinking what I am thinking, however. I don't believe that Blink-182 is really Morrissey's style, per se. I think Deano was more akin to Morrissey's style, to say the very least. But why should I worry or complain? Morrissey has *always* put out amazing material (yes, including Southpaw).

Maybe Morrissey is going to re-invent himself with this new album. Not that he needs to. The excitement is almost too much to bear. I am hoping for TWO concert dates in Chicago, one at the Aragon and one at the Riv. I will be there. With my hearing aid and gladioli.

        Truly,

Get it out of your heads that even if he played on the record, that it would sound like blink...he is a phenomenal drummer...that's it and that's all. Morrissey would have been privileged if Travis would have played on the record. The problem with Dean and Spike, is that they bring no real musicianship and experimentation or new ideas to the table...it's a bummer this story never came to fruitution.
