"You are the quarry" is a line taken from a poem that I have stumbled upon.

Lebanon Art poetry - Joseph Matar (translated from French). Excerpt:

Somewhere,
far, far in the West,
in the mines of gold,
you are the quarry
whence I draw all the gold in the universe.

A quarry never exhausted,
fed by that river divine
whose name slips my mind...

At your feet,
all the world's riches
where the yellow metal gleams.

Fascinating quarry,
dazzling,
like a thousand stars.

I hope that's not where Morrissey got the album title, but it would be an awfully big coincidence if it wasn't.

    The poem is simply drivel.

well... maybe. personally, i found that if one pops "you are the quarry" [including the inverted commas] into google, one will find that the phrase is FFFFFFFFar from unique and is found in various poems and short stories on the net and - noDoubt in plain old print too...

        i liked the s&m sites best ;p
        very enlightening...

i'm sure morrissey has some rather queer ideas toward his fans... here i sit with his maladjusted t-shirt, "wide to receive" spread across my arse... i AM the quarry, indeed - aren't we all...

I immediately googled the phrase "You are the Quarry" last week and found that it's not exactly a unique turn of phrase and has been used in several different contexts. (Google it now and you'll get mostly Morrissey stuff...that's good!)

I'm quite certain that with Morrissey's most recent comments regarding Prince Charles foxhunting it refers to his interest in stopping animal cruelty.

A Hat for a Cat, by Laura Daykin

There is a hat, a simple cat, a brown door-mat,
the cat sat on the mat with the hat.
"alas, my dear", cried Mr Cox through fear,
"catherine can drink, as long as it's not beer."

the cat stared, what a strange set of words,
        utterly perplexed, she simply purred.
the door opened, in swooped death,
due to the cat being squashed by the one and only RF.

"Oh! he moaned. "was looking for the cat..."
"Yes," sobbed Mr. Cox, "Now there's blood on my hat..."
RF stooped and said not to worry,
"After all, mr. cox, YOU ARE THE QUARRY."

Can I just point out that the poem in question is just a translation from the original French?

Therefore it is merely one interpretation of the French wording. Take this as conclusive evidence (along with my reply to the 1st comment, above [please read it])that Morrissey's supposed album title has NOTHING to do with this poem.

I still like the idea of the title being a reference to the former boxer with the surname Quarry. He kept making comebacks against advice from others it seems. This would be in keeping with Moz's humourous sense of self depreciation and his boxing fascination.
