Tindersticks - "We are one with Morrissey"
posted by davidt on Monday January 19 2004, @09:00AM

Richard Martin writes:

In a recent Daily telegraph interview, Stuart Staples, the lead vocalist/lyricist of the Tindersticks said of his band's increasingly cult status: "We are one with morrissey. Under-rated, morose, and from the depths of England."
He then said he was "excited, yet sceptical" of the new morrissey album this year.

"He will have to prove the critics wrong, because in all fairness, it has been a while since he did anything last, 5 years I think."

Actually, it was 7 years. But his comments were a nice touch, the Tindersticks are a fantastic group. They hail from nottingham, hence his 'depth of England' comment.

The Tindersticks are superb. Saw them a while back in the courtyard of (historic) Somerset House... gentle... orchestral... moving... mesmeric...

Very true-they are the best British band of the last decade. I never realised Morrissey was much of an influence on their music but I guess it makes sense-especially in some of the lyrics. A few prime examples...

"Have you ever wondered what's inside that keeps us together? Have you ever wanted to take that knife and discover?"

"In a hall of mirrors, you get sick of yourself"

"Those awkward little things, so endearing"

"Can I find some place to cry these tears of shame?"

They share the same witty and morose nature in many cases-especially in music for tindersticks.

If you've never heard anything by them-get your hands on something! I can't recommend them highly enough...

I have to say, I'm beginning to really hate Tindersticks.

I bought 'marbles'. Pretty good. I saw them live. Good. Bought the album. Ok. I saw them a few more times. I'm not 100% bought but they're interesting; different, definitely. The only problem is, this singer thinks he sounds really cool when he talks, whereas really he sounds like a Geography teacher from Nottingham.

Simple Pleasure was pretty good. But apparently the band hated it. Then the two albums since then came along. Listening to them is like torture for me. All the songs are ridiculously stripped down and formulaic. And they go on for 7 minutes! And for some reason I keep buying the stupid things! I'm going to have to see the doctor. I want to smash his stupid violin over his head! Write some new parts, you prick! I HATE THIS BAND!

          Sorry!
