On MTVNews.com, "What are Outkast Listening to?"

The Smiths, "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me"

Andre 3000: I personally wish I would have written that Smiths' song "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me." Genius song. This girl named Hannah in Atlanta turned me on to them. 'Cause I was telling her that I loved the Hives and the Buzzcocks and she said, "Hey, you need to check these guys out." [On the song] it's this dude and he says, "Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me/ No hope, no harm, just another false alarm." So it's like he had a relationship and then he woke up and he was like, "Damn, it was just a dream."

  • Who cares about Outkast's Andre and what he has to say? Morrissey has more talent in his fingernail than Andre and his band have. Outkast's music stinks and they should do something more constructive like serve me fries at Burger King!

  • I do. You dont have to blow out andre's candle to make moz's burn brighter. you must be a very sad person to have to respond to a man complementing your hero this way.
"Hey Ya" is the best single this year. The best video this year. If you dont see that, your dead inside. At any rate it's better than morrissey's releases for 2003.
While i consider myself the biggest moz fan i know, i would rather buy the new outkast than the kill uncle re-re-re-release.

  • Andre is SUPER cooler than thought!

    The Buzzcocks? The Hives?

Righ on! Even my music snob boyfriend who DETESTS current urban hip hip/soul/r&b (he prefers "real soul") digs Andre's song and video and that in itself is a real miracle!

  • Andre 3000 is awesome. He has complete cross-over appeal. The Love Below got him into the majors and I predict that if his next album has a slightly more serious artistic tone he could be the new Prince.

(Now that Prince is addicted to recording gospel funk it seems. He could make a comeback though.)

  • That absolutely everyone on the planet seems to adore "Hey Ya"? Indie rock geeks, Britney Spears fans, and even the people who post on here, where it's verboten to like any music at all are all wild about it. While I think it's a decent song, I can't really see why it has such broad appeal.

  • Got the new thrills single "Dont Steal Our Sun". Their version of "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" (on the b-side)is top class. Excellent version. Also the 7in record has a cover version of REM's "One I Love" which is pretty hot as well

  • ...why "Hey Ya!" has got such a broad appeal. It's because a great glut of the music that is READILY available out there to the kids is unmitigatingly shite. Anything slightly off-kilter, any video that features a Rickenbacker bass guitar instead of parading a throng of third-rate porno actresses and so on is bound to raise eyebrows...mind included. It's kinda Prince when he used to be good.

Better him than frickin' 50 fucking cent(s).

  • I'm a huge Moz fan, but like many contributing here I've really got into Outkast's new album - both disks are superb, but The Love Below really is increadible - an amazing amalgamtion of funk, hip-hop, soul, 60s beat tunes, and just about anything else you wanna throw in. Its class...

... so I find it disturbing that many of my fellow Moz fans have just dismissed in in the posts above (and probably below after i finish this). Have you listened to it guys, or have you simply decided that as Outkast are a 'hip-hop' band you won't like it, and in fact you'll go ahead and hate it. Such a strange way to behave from a group of people who consider themslves smarter than the usual music fan. Its a shame aswell - while you sit around moping and waiting for a Moz release that might disapoint (and be honest here, theres always a chance it'll be shit, even though i hope it won't) you're letting new, groundbreaking and (most importantly) great fun music pass you by. I asure you that Andre 300 and Big Boi make you think, dance and smile; its great for driving to, shagging to, even just doing the washing up to if you're so inclined. Rather than dismiss it, listen to it and then tell me you hate it. 'Cos you won't. 'Cos you'll love it!

Actually, Andre isn't really interested in continuing with Outkast. He has moved from Atlanta to LA to get into acting. He is taking up clarinet and sax. He is also considering music school.

Here is how he feels about music:
"I don't feel the music the same way I did when I first got into hip-hop, loving it, loving writing lyrics and studying other people's lyrics," Andre told The New York Times. "Back then all I would think about was beats and rhymes."

"The next time I perform on stage, I see myself playing in a band," Andre continued. "I want it to be a total departure from Outkast."

Thanks for your great insight, "Dallow", too bad it wasn't remotely related to what Andre has in mind for his career.

I strongly recommend you change your name to Shallow.

  • Their beats are hypnotic, their sound is totally original, and the lyrics are clever and often humorous. Outkast is wonderful and I can see how Andre 3000 would be influenced by somebody as super cool as Morrissey. Outkast's success is a testimony to their talant and musical openmindedness.

  • my pal Rob saw Andre at Ameoba Records in LA about a year ago with a basket full of indie and punk CDs. he mentioned seeing The Smiths and Belle & Sebastian among Andre's selections, so this comes as no surprise to me. listening to "The Love Below", i definitely hear a bit of indie influence in some spots... all in all, a really excellent and fun record!

i'm convinced that if you don't like 'Hey Ya!', you're a soulless bastard. i was at my very corporate employer's christmas party last week, and everyone just went nuts when it came on. how fucking rare is that these days? in the 60's, people had Motown, the Brit Invasion, and all that great shit; and now turn on the radio... Korn and Brittany... ugh. music should unite people, not separate them.

that being said... god bless outkast!

  • Aside from being an entertainer, in every sense of the word, now Andre's proved himself to be quite intelligent and to have good taste.
Please listen to the lyrics of "Hey Ya" and you'll find something deeper than simply a dance tune. It's message is questioning the existence of love as a general theme.
    VERY Moz-esque.
