Michael Stipe names Morrissey as 'inspiration'

Stella the diver writes:

There's a interview with R.E.M in the December edition of Q magazine, and on Stipe's inspirations it says:

'If Stipe inspired so many, who inspired him?

He was a great admirer of The Smiths and is said to have shared conspirational strolls in Hyde Park with Morrissey when R.E.M visted London in their formative years. One can only imagine the conversations....'

Stipe likes Morrissey... that's fine. But it's really hard to see the moz-inspiration in REM's music. Their music is mainstream, their lyrics have this touch of too much selfseriousness and Stipe always gotta tell the world about his views on politics...

Don't get me wrong, I love REM but I sometimes find it hard to see the moz-inspiration. Personally I think 'Everybody hurts' - and Stipes way of moving his arms in the video for 'Losing my religion' - is the closest he gets to Morrissey...

i can absolutely see influence in REMs music..maybe its a little more outwardly involved and quirkier at points..but i could name a good bit of songs that are smiths/moz sounding...and as rumour has it, stipe and moz are not quite friends but far from aquantinces...

i know moz is an REM fan, as well..

Duh - They have so much in common! (Score:1)
In terms of being the premier alternative rock band of the 1980's, REM is to the USA as the Smiths are to the UK. While their lyrical styles are very different (Morrissey is very upfront and specific, Michael's early lyrics are very abstract), their music is definately scribed from the same pages of rock history. During the 80's, when alt rock was all electronica, the Smiths and REM were the defintive bands to bring guitars (with the lovely juxtaposition of accoustic and electric) back to the forefront. You can tell both bands have had obsessions with 60's music (Love, The Byrds, girl groups, The Beatles) and the 70's (Patti Smith, Bowie, TRex). During the 80's, both bands were extremely prolific, delivering a classic album every year of their existence. Plus, what about all the darkness -- Isn't it interesting that REM's most melancholy album (my fave Fables...) came out the same year as Meat is Murder. Plus, I haven't even gone into all the homoerotic connections. Yes REM and the Smiths do have much in common, including the fact that they are totally the best groups of all time
