Morrissey mentioned in Bust magazine (summer 2003)

Morrissey gets a mention and small picture in the article "Gay Men We Love" in the summer 2003 issue of Bust ("for women with something to get off their chests") magazine. The picture is from the cover of "Your Arsenal." Here's what the writer, Amy Kellner, has to say:

"The Smiths were my favorite band in high school and I swear I didn't know Morrissey was gay. That's how naive I was. Of course now that I'm older, wiser and gayer, I can appreciate the Smiths on a whole new level. I look back and say 'Oh my God, 'This Charming Man' is totally about a gay hustler picking up a trick!' But when I was 13, it was simply a melancholy song about a 'punctured bicycle on a hillside desolate.' That's the genius of Morrissey. His lyrics are just ambiguous enough for you to make them your own, whether you're gay or just 'arty,' because those two things have the same stigma in high school. Recently, I was reading 'The Fourth Sex: Adolescent Extremes,' and it described adolescence as 'a sexually indefinite moment, in which gender ambiguity prevails.' I hereby dub Morrissey 'Patron Saint of the Fourth Sex.'" (p. 58)

Not sure that Morrissey has ever declared he was "gay," but I guess the writer makes that assumption.

    Rent boy? (Score:0)
    I like the "rent boy" interpretation, but that's what Picadilly Palare's about! I really hear "This Charming Man" about sexual awakening. Kind of like "William, It Was Really Nothing." But I think in songs that saved your life, Morrissey is quoted as saying it just was a collection of lines that sounded good together.

          He's never said he was gay. How can you put someone in an item called "gay men we love" when he's never said he's gay? Very odd.
          Just because he writes about homosexuality doesn't mean he's gay. Doesn't mean he's straight either, but...oh well, the story is old, and it goes on...
          In the word interview he said he doesn't necessarily write about himself but about characters.

          How hateful and vile. This excerpt was written obviously by a stupid ignoramus with no English skills whatsoever. I like to be positive, but I can only read this stupid excerpt and cry. David- please spare us from horrible journalism.

          What I'm surprised about is the total disregard a "fan" seems to have for Morrissey and his private. I don't want to debate the whole is-he-or-isn't-he thing because I don't care anymore if he is or isn't. But it's very disrespectful, not to mention slanderous, to out someone who hasn't publicly declared themselves out.

              Morrissey has brought this upon himself. Just take a look at his lyrics, his album covers, his obsession with boxers and so on. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, well, it just might be a duck.

              So why not call it a duck, or in this case why not call Morrissey gay?

              I know for a lot of straight fans the idea of idolizing a gay man must be hard to swollow. So I can understand why they feel so strongly about this excerpt.

              Could it be homophobia?

              I thought all this was settled ages ago? It certainly was for me, as far back as the Vauxhall & I signings at HMV in London in 1994 when Moz turned up with his boyfriend. And then wrote Sunny when the guy pissed off out of his life. I didn't think there was any doubt about his sexuality any more?

              For those of you who haven't quite got it yet (and it appears there are many) MORRISSEY IS GAY. End of.

              PS. Don't worry David, he can't sue for this post. In order for a statement to be libellous, the law states that it not only has to be incorrect but also has to "lower a person in the eyes of right-thinking members of society". Stating that someone is gay has not been libellous for about 30 years.

              I've never been remotely interested in this whole 'is he or isn't he?' debate.
              Ever since I was very young I've loved the Smiths, and it never ever occured to me to think "Hmm, I wonder if the singer's gay?"

              It literally DOESN'T MATTER. Why on earth should his sexuality matter? Moz is clearly bored of it, I'm bored of it, just shut up.
