Just a quick thing, which may distract you, for five minutes, from all from that legal babble ...

The BBC have posted some new cover versions of some Smith classics on their website.

I think the highlight so far is Moses' version of Shakespears Sister. What d'y'all reckon?

In Real format (look in the "Access The Archives" box):
  • The Thrills - "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me"
  • Alpinestars - "Panic"
  • Moses - "Shakespeare's Sister"
  • Nada Surf - "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out"
Also included are "The Smiths @ The Beeb" parts 1 and 2.

...this one before, but The Smiths' covers just don't work. The ones here just sound strange for a lack of a better term. The Thrills' version sounds like they were just about to fall asleep, which may correspond somehow with the title, but the outcome is inevitably and impossibly shite.
Alpinestars-never-heard-of-them take on "Panic" is probably the worst I've ever heard, so I even won't waste my breath.
Moses - ok, they didn't slaughter the song completely which is a miracle in itself. In fact, compared to the rest it does sound like they put some effort in thinking how to make it.
Well, that's enough, I'm going back to the originals.

Actually -seeing as these are all so bloody awfull, who would be able to cover a Smiths - Morrissey song without slaughtering it ?

      Suggestions ?

I still think his version of Skin Storm is far better than the original.

Would you all be happier if the Smiths and Morrissey were just forgotten and their contributions pushed aside? I see this as an honor and a tribute from these bands to Morrissey as they surely intended it to be. These musicians certainly have the right to record songs from artists that inspired them and I think the world is a better place for it. The sad part is that of course some band members from those bands that did the covers must see this site and how depressing for them to be judged by those who do not pick up an instrument themselves. Armchair critics. If you can do better then PLEASE do. I would love to fill 10 CDs with Smiths and Morrissey covers as I am sure many more who visit this site would. Morrissey has always had two types of fans; the manic depressives and the compasionates. Many fall into both categories but I wonder where all the compasionates are? The ones who see life as something more than the time you fill before death. I know they are on this site and most likely in the majority but we need them to start posting. This site should be a supportive group of music fans with taste who celebrate together the joys and wonders of Morrissey's works not an orgy of negativity.
So I thank ALL the bands out there who have and will cover Smiths and Morrissey songs. I thank you for letting us know who inspires you in your own musical words because I share the very same inspiration.
