Press release from Reynolds & Hearn:

THE SMITHS - SONGS THAT SAVED YOUR LIFE OUT NOW!

Simon Goddard's much-anticipated new Smiths book 'Songs That Saved Your Life' published by Reynolds & Hearn hits the book stands this week (in stores by week-ending Friday Dec 6th).

This is the first thorough song-by-song guide of The Smiths' repertoire both released and unreleased, from their earliest demos and informal rehearsals in 1982 to their final fractured studio session five years later. With new interviews and details of lost instrumentals, alternate versions and lyrical changes never before mentioned in print, it is also the first book to disclose details of such rarities as the famed lost Morrissey/Marr composition "A Matter Of Opinion", the curious "I Misses You" and the original first draft of "Bengali In Platforms" with guitarist Ivor Perry.

"A milestone in The Smiths' history... aside from the actual records there is nothing else you need on this subject" - RECORD COLLECTOR

"A vast weight of research, crucially allied with a commendable critical distance... If the existence of an experimental jazz version of 'Never Had No One Ever' is the kind of thing you have dreamed of, this is the place to come." - MUSIC WEEK

*In the UK the book is priced at £14.99, available in all good book shops. US customers can order the book via Amazon.com.

I received an advance preview print out of this and it really is a great read. I don't agree with the review of it in the new issue of Q which seems to slag it off for being over-detailed and not dwelling on the ugly stuff (like Rourke's heroin problem), but then most Q journalists are complete idiots (they didn't even mention all the unreleased lyrics and outtakes the book lists, like Matter of Opinion, which are fascinating).

At last something that discusses the Smiths in terms of musical achievement and not the court case. It's every bit a must-read as Severed Alliance and much less depressing, showing the smiths in a much more positive light.

So he didn't enjoy the albert hall gig as much as the smiths? Well that's his opinion (and his review in Uncut wasn't that bad by the way, even called Mozz a genius) and from what I've heard about his book it sounds genuinely interesting. At least Mike Joyce will be pleased that sickos like you have now got a new target for their scorn.
