Manchester Evening News issues apology to Morrissey

The Manchester Evening News on Saturday 30th November issued the following apology on page 7.

APOLOGY TO MORRISSEY
On November 4th 2002, the MEN published an article in which singer Morrissey thanked all those who voted him the Greatest Mancunian ever in our readers poll, during a concert in Blackburn.

We would like to point out that the MEN made a false and incorrect comment in reference to Morrissey's feelings towards the city of Manchester, namely that winning the poll was 'not bad for someone who claims they hate Manchester'

We wish our readers to know that this comment was reported incorrectly and at no time has Morrissey expressed this sentiment about Manchester.
As a result, we wish to sincerely apologise to Morrissey for any hurt or upset this may have caused.

Morrissey has played an important role in helping to shape Manchester's musical heritage and has always had a great affinity with the city.

End.

It's very rare you get a newspaper acknowledging a mistake and apologising, I hope Morrissey will have noticed it, as Manchester still means a lot to him and obviously he still means a lot to Manchester.

As a professional journalist-- I know I'm opening the floodgates by the very admission-- I think it's only correct and expected that an apology should be issued for an inaccurate statement. Especially from a rag that purports to be a newspaper more than a tabloid gossip sheet.
Of course I'm not employed right now, so maybe I should learn something about reporting falsehoods...

Morrissey mentioned the original article on stage at Brixton, and said that he wanted to put the record straight. He really did seem to be very angry.

In someways of course this is all quite odd for Mozzer since (like the Queen) he has never tended to comment on newspaper allegations... even following the Finsbury Park furore when a response was probably warranted.
