Myra Hindley dead at 60

Gwynnebaer writes:

Myra Hindley, co-conspirator of the now-legendary and brutal Moor Murders outside Manchester in the mid-1960's, has died in prison at age 60. BBC News article.

Myra and fellow child-killer Ian Brady are mentioned in "Suffer Little Children", as well as being quoted in "Still Ill". Morrissey was a child living in Manchester at the time of the murders.
[davidt: what is the "Still Ill" quote?]

Adam also writes:

Moors Murderer Myra Hindley, the subject of The Smiths' Suffer Little Children, has had the last rites administered to her in a hospital near Highpoint Prison, Suffolk where she has been for 36 years. She suffered a suspected heart attack early this month.

If this is the end, it will mean the Home Secretary (Interior Minister) will have succeeded in his attempts to ensure she serves a genuine "life" sentence for the Moors Murders she committed with Ian Brady.

Celibate Cry writes:

Myra Hindley died last night age 60

Myra Hindley and Ian Brady were sentenced for life for the Moors murders, and responsable for killing 3 [4] young children, and recorded the children's cry for help. [one body of a young boy was never found]. "Suffer Little Children" was the first song Morrissey/Johnny Marr demo'd, and is about the Moors murders, which had a great effect on Morrissey's youth.

Myra Hindley's body is still in custody of the Suffolk hospital, and the security is very tight, preparations are made for Myra Hindley's funeral, which will be on a secret place. Officials are afraid of riots ans retaliations of the victim/s [children]. Story is on BBC Ceefax, and in all UK papers today

What horrendous acts of horror...what can I say? I'm not from Manchester, not even England, but I think when it comes to this sort of revolting behavior, it doesn't matter where in the world you are. It's still haunting and it's something that will never be forgotten.

However, having said that, I understand that being from that area would definitely leave a much more impression and I can only imagine how eerie and realistically haunting it is for those who lived during the time of the murders, and especially lived near the site of the murders - then and now.

It's just so horrible...I guess words really can't express the sorrow for those children. As for Myra Hindley - well, okay, she repented, but -I can't forgive her for what she did to those children and their families; however, it's not up to me...

Although I am English, I am also European. I'm sure that if the European Court of Human Rights had had jurisdiction here it would have felt it proper to have released her after 30 years.

The women was in her 20's when these hideous crimes were committed, and that was a long long time ago.

I voted Labour in the last general election, but this wasn't done to give politicians the right to decide the tariff for individual prisoners.

It would have been complicated to release the women, and there would have been a reaction from those directly affected. However, we have to accept that all people have human rights.

To whoever said that she was in prison too long, what about the mother of Keith Bennet? Don't you think that she has spent too long waiting for a body to bury? And what about the parents and families of Pauline Read, John Kilbride, and Lesley Anne Downey? Don't you think they've suffered enough? I can't even begin to imagine the pain and horror those families went through, not to mention the victims.

Those of you that feel sympathy for her and feel that she had reformed, would you have left her alone with your kids?

Every time I see that picture of her, my blood begins to boil. Was Hindley ever 'gentle and kind'? The question's too ridiculous to answer.

The only benefit that I can see from having released her from prison would be that the public would have been able to stone her to death.

Hindley had it way too easy. She was able to complete a university degree whilst in prison. There are many law-abiding members of the public that can't afford the luxury of a university education. Worst of all, Hindley was allowed to die in a hospital with some shred of dignity. Those poor innocent children that she and Ian Brady sexually assaulted, tortured, and murdered were not afforded such dignity. They should release her corpse for mongrels to tear apart.

So next time one of you even begins to feel a grain of sympathy for that stonehearted witch, remember the faces of those children. Those poor children.

Morrissey wrote a song saying that the ghosts of the children would haunt her for the rest of her life. He wrote,

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's most reviled female prisoner, "Moors Murderer" Myra Hindley, who died last week, will be cremated in a ceremony barred to the public, police say. The committal will take place at 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday in Cambridge. Hindley, who along with her lover Ian Brady sexually abused and killed five children, aroused widespread public hatred that barely dimmed four decades after the murders. She died last Friday aged 60 from respiratory failure after spending 36 years in jail. The murders of the children, who were buried on moors near Manchester, cast a shadow over 1960s Britain. Periodic talk that Hindley might be released would produce a welter of protest and few Britons lost sight of Hindley as a figure of hate. One of the most shocking aspects of the trial was the revelation that Hindley and Brady had tape-recorded their crimes. Detectives said they would never forget hearing one of their victims, 10-year-old Leslie Ann Downey, pleading for mercy as they killed her, or the tune of the "Little Drummer Boy" the couple played as they carried out the murders. Hindley always maintained she was driven to participate in the killings by Brady, a petty criminal said to be fascinated by Nazi killings and death. But police officers investigating the case believed Hindley was a willing and active participant, not the cowed and coerced woman she claimed to be. A chain smoker who suffered from heart disease, Hindley fought hard for her freedom. While her supporters said she had found God and repented, most Britons wanted her to die in prison.

'She invited me to see her because she wanted me to change my views. I came away not with an alternative opinion but with an entrenched one. She struck me as a very emotionless, very cold person - perhaps that's inevitable after 30-odd years in jail. But she was very adept at telling you what she thought you wanted to hear, if she thought it would bring her closer to release.'

The man has been on death row for almost two decades even though much of the evidence in the case is in his favor. I don't know much about the English justice system, but I guess there isn't much use in arguing about whether or not Myra Hindley got enough time in jail or not.
