Royal Albert Hall review by Simon Goddard in new issue of Uncut (Dec.)

Jason Farrow writes:

Uncut magazine is, IMHO, the best music (and film) magazine currently around. Page 192 of the new issue (December 2002 - the one with Keith Richards on the front) carries a review of the RAH gigs by Simon Goddard.

Selected bits:

- "The former 'voice of a generation' proves some lights really do never go out."
- "The main difference between The Smiths live and Morrissey live is perhaps the difference between adoration and idolisation."
- Moz is "an Elvis-meets-Boris Karloff-meets-Norman Wisdom" and "is what a pop idol should be."
- "'Irish Blood, English Heart' is easily the best of the five new songs played, none of which sadly show any signs of departure from the tepid indie-rock of his last few albums. He says it's his autobiography in four words. It might be more honest if he made it six - 'Irish Blood, English Heart, American Citizen'. Morrissey lives in LA, so when he plays the injured patriot card, he's doing so from the seclusion of a Californian ivory tower."
- "Morrissey is still impossibly brilliant when it comes to doing what he does best. Being Morrissey."

Speaking of Simon Goddard (who wrote the Uncut review) - what's happening with his Smiths book ("The Songs That Saved Your Life") ? I know the release date has been put back once already - to the 6th of Dec. ? - but Amazon UK no longer have it available to pre-order ?

According to the publishers website, Reynolds & Hearn books, it is still out Dec 6th - www.rhbooks.com.

There's also a mention of it in the new Vanity Fair (!) with Nicole Kidman on cover. Again it says Dec 6th, £14.95 so - unless we have another Pat Reid scenario - we can expect it then I suppose?

typically unintelligent analysis of Morrissey's more recent stuff and the new songs.

"Irish blood, English heart" is very good, but "First of the Gang to Die" is beautiful and far closer to Morrissey's greatest solo and Smiths works. "Mexico" recalls "That joke isn't funny" and "Bores" is a great song. Only "I like you" can possibly be compared to recent stuff on 'Southpaw' and 'Maladjusted.'

Unfortunately cynicism is very popular in the music press these days, and sadly this seems to be no exception. I honestly believe if Morrissey had previewed "suedehead" and "Disappointed" in 2002 rather than "the first of the gang" and "Mexico" that his review would have said the same!

His last two albums were a little disappointing, but these new songs owe very little to the last two albums.

anyways, i didn't think his last two albums were disapointing...Southpaw is probably the Morrissey album i most often listen to. maladjusted seems to have been an attempt to try something new-not entirely successful, but not disapointing either as there was some outstanding songs inbetween the crummy ones.

am i the only one that thinks Irish Blood, English Heart is the least good of the new songs? not that it's bad, just sorta boring.

so, in conclusion, this Goddard fellow seems to be living in the past...the Smiths are dead.
