Ryan Adams on never meeting Morrissey

Some trivial Morrissey namecheck in today's Times ('Cold Call' section), I assume because Ryan Adams is here to pay the Royal Festival Hall, his profile is being raised. For those that don't know, the article is a regular Times feature, where celebrities are called and asked a string of quickfire questions. Alan Jackson calls Ryan Adams...

A pre-amble of conversation about Adams' year and love life etc, before Jackson asks him;

AJ: The Smiths are your all time favourite band. Have you met Morrissey, and if not, would you like too?

RA: No and no. He's a shy guy. He doesn't need hassle from me. He's given me enough already, just with his music. Why would people want to meet their heroes? Chrissie Hynde an exception of course. She's a babe, as well as being an excellent songwriter. I can see absolutely why someone like me would want to meet someone like her"

    Saw him last night at the Festival Hall. Did a short version of "Asleep" on the piano as well.

          Good lawd, lads and lasses, even when some poor chap says the words you would say yourselves if given such a rare chance, you rankle and wrinkle and wrangle and give the quote a royal screwing. Ryan Adams (who has always offered kind sentiments Morrissey-wise) is not my Number One Idol either, but the sentiments he expresses appear genuine and congenial, and therefore I haven't a word to write against him.

          Are we, after all, so myopic as to attack the messenger and not the message? Are we so cloistered and defensive as to bark down the friendly words of a supposed foe? Blind adoration isn't thoughtful adoration, after all, and I'd much rather be complicated, thoughtful, and permissive than dumbly, arrogantly devoted. And for heaven's sake, grow up.

            call me crazy--but i have a real weak spot for the drippy twang of whiskeytown. thought gold was his weakest effort to date and am a bit puzzled by his friendship with elton john but he does has an undeniably squishy cuteness.

            not sure what the hostility is about--i think the broad range of fans is a testamonial to the puissance of the smiths/morrissey. it's the human elements in the poetry and music that people find. for that reason i'd like to think there's no stereotypical morrissey fan.

            as for his sentiments on never meeting morrissey, i would say this is a healthier if not less annoying approach to life.
