Johnny Marr on turning down Smiths reformation for MTV "Unplugged"

Jeff writes:

Today's (Tuesday) BBC 6 Music news featured some comments from Johnny Marr regarding Morrissey's claim that no-one had ever tried to get The Smiths back together. Interestingly, Marr claims MTV approached his management in the early nineties about reforming for an MTV Unplugged performance.

Alain was yet again in the BBC6Music studios, being interviewed by Liz Kershaw again. He said something about how Sanctuary were interested again and some other label had been in touch too. And how Morrissey had loved the touring and how Morrissey chose the Smiths songs and they (the band) "learnt em up". So later on in the day the "news" every hour on 6Music was "New record deal for Morrissey".
I didn't bother sending it in as a story because Alain's been on the radio a few times now saying pretty much that a record deal is looming.

What a bunch of idiots.... (Score:0)
Why on earth would the pair of them want to reform for Unplugged? They are not The Eagles or some other worn-out band that are desperate to remind people how good they were, everybody knows how good they were, critics, other artists, fans and even people who don't like them have to agree that they were great musicians and writers. The Smiths despised MTV mentality and they won't do it, simple as that. I don't know why all the debate about whether Morrissey solo is better than The Smiths, this is pointless and will always be argued endlessly. In my own opinion, Morrissey solo is an entirely different entity altogether than The Smiths, even the fans he has attracted for the last 10 years or so are probably the most bitter, cynical and argumentative lot that that I have come across. The Smiths fans seemed to respect eachother more and loved the band compared to the solo fans. The other thing that is irritating is the Americanisation of the whole Smiths thing. How on earth can anybody from somewhere like America relate to what Morrissey was singing about which is so tightly embedded in the streets and his experiences of working-class life in Manchester? The whole Smiths bubble is gone forever, in the memories of the people who really knew what it was like. I'm glad they will never reform just so that a bunch of pretentious and worse still, middle-class idiots can hijack the whole thing as their own. You just don't get it do you? Morrissey is NOT The Smiths, The Smiths are dead forever. Even his current band's tuneless dirge, plinky-plonky tinpot indie guitar parts and solos are not a patch on any single beautiful chord or guitar line that Marr ever played. What an awful site this really is.
