Article on Morrissey websites in 'The Guardian' (Oct. 26, 2002)

An article in 'The Editor' section of 'The Guardian' newspaper on Saturday states that websites dedicated to artists such as Radiohead and U2 are nowhere near as popular as Morrissey websites such as your own. The article titled 'The week on the web' by Bibi van der Zee talks about Radiohead,U2, George Clooney and Harry Potter websites and then begins:-
   
"Touchingly, all those sites are being hammered in popularity by a musician who has no music to sell. His music goes out for free on the internet, but Steven Morrissey famously doesn't have a record deal. (In a recent interview he said record companies keep wanting him to do weird things such as make music with Radiohead, which meant absolutely nothing to him). Morrissey's internet pressence is absolutely gigantic. Five of his latest songs can be found in MP3 format at Vivahate.org. while other fanzines are staggeringly busy, considering he hasn't released an album for five years. What does all this mean? It means that, as usual with the dear old internet, it's all a giant lottery. U2 and George Clooney can only watch in envy as Morrissey's songs climb the internet charts. Perhaps they can console themselves with the fact that they're actually being paid for their hard work."

      I've been reading a lot of reviews on Morrissey concerts lately, even some that are in another language that I can vaguely understand. This has inspired me to be creative. This is just a proposed set list for future concerts. The list retains a lot of the currently played songs but has some Kill Uncle Material also. Some of these songs haven't been played in a while, and although they are far from his best material, I'm sure it would be interesting to hear them again.

      1. Hand in Glove (Instead of I Want the one I can't have)
      2. Suedehead
      3. Driving your Girlfriend Home (Instead of Little Man, What Now?)
      4. The Last of the International Playboys (Instead of Hairdresser on Fire).
      5. Jack the Ripper
      6. First of the Gang to Die

      8. Mute Witness (Instead of Alsatian Cousins)
      9. Our Frank (Instead of Sister I'm a Poet)
      10. Every Day is Like Sunday

          The websites dedicated to U2 are more numerous, more popular, and in some ways better done then the Morrissey ones.

          Not that the Morrissey ones are bad, by any means, but to say that U2 sites lose out to Morrissey ones is just poor journalism. Did this journalist spend more than 30 minutes researching and writing this article?

          I don't think those sites are that great. They're no fun...they're so bland, gray and boring. But, they're clean I guess. I like the way that www.youtwo.net navigates, but that's about it.

          Maybe it's just because I hate U2. They're a corporation so they need to have a clean professional website to sell themselves. This site is all about the love for Morrissey. It's dedicated to truly devoted Morrissey fans, for the love of the music. Morrissey-Solo isn't a place to *sell* Morrissey as an artist. It's a place where people can share their thoughts and feelings about Morrissey and how he's a part of their everyday lives, not to discuss his latest single they're playing on KROQ, or his "brand spankin new" video on MTV (ick!) as is the case with U2. Moz is underground...
