The Smiths heard on NYC's #1 rap station

As unbelievable and unfound as it may sound, The Smiths were played not once but twice this morning on New York City's #1 rap and hip hop station, 97.1FM. At approximately 7:45am this morning (Sept. 30th, 2002), The Smiths' "Stop Me if You Think You've Heard This One Before" was aired in its entirety. The same song was again played at around 8:20am. There were no alterations done to the song nor was it a remix of any kind. It is not known at this point why The Smiths would get air time on 97.1, which only broadcasts the likes of Nelly, Jay-Z, and other hip-hop and contemporary R&B artists.

      As odd as most would think this is, I can see how something as this is possible. This is most likely the works of a insider(Intern???)trying to expose the hip/hop listeners what good music really sounds like And their own attempt to gratify themselves and listen to something they prefer at work.

      Stone Roses on Y100 philly (Score:1)
      There must be something up with the DJs at larger radio station, sneaking actual good quality music into the playlist when none is looking. Just recently I was scanning in my car and Heard the Stone Roses on Philly's Y100 (Top 40 crap). While I'm sure this is an everyday occurance over in the UK and Europe, I have never heard them on US radio, besides college stations. And they didn't play Adored or Elephant Stone, it was Daybreak of all songs. Go figure.

      I would like to see at least two other people posting on this board who actually heard this happen for themselves. I live in the NYC area and find it difficult to believe that this occurred on Hot97, a huge Emmis Commuications property, which uses MP3s/MP4s, not CD's for their music tracking for broadcast. (Exception: they use vinyl on mix shows.) I suppose it is possible an intern might've burned "Stop Me" to the broadcast server, but upon playback, nobody on that morning crew jumped in to stop it? If this really happened, tell us, please, what did Star & Buc Wild say when they played it BOTH times? If this actually went down, it'd be amazing.

        Confirmed thru sources on NY radio message board. It was played, but with the HOT97 sweeper on top of the song throughout its playback. I haven't found out yet why Star & Buc Wild did this gag. For what its worth, these two guys list "Master of Puppets" by Metallica and "Subdivisions" by Rush as their favorite songs on the HOT97 website. This has to be tongue-in-cheek. These are the same two guys that talk about the difference in smell between "black hos and white hos" and "why playa-hatas are just bitch-ass niggas". So go figure.

      Morrisseys' ability to get people to respond emotionally has been a reality since The Smiths
      first took to a stage. Armed with a presence, a sound, an idea unlike any rock and roll band it should be no surprise that people newly discovering this response in themselves should translate this experience into public Mozzer acts of disobedience. The Smiths getting airplay on 97.1? Funny.

        Gives them a chance to listen to some good music too. Imagine having to listen to that bile all day. These people felt sorry for people who only listen to rap (so-called) music. That's why they played the Smiths.

          I work in radio and I bet what happened here is that the Prophet system that most stations use these days accidently locked up after it began to spit out music that may have previously been scanned in for another station to use within the same company (all radio is now in clusters within a larger company) but for a different format. The question is: what station would play that song? If any, unfortunately. And to happen twice? Hmmmmm...sounds like a fast one.
