"The return of Morrissey" - by Emily Sheffield in Los Angeles, Evening Standard (Sept. 12, 2002)

Excerpt:

Next week London music fans will be greeted by an extraordinary sight. A man who changed the face of British music and then disappeared for years, to live in obscure anonymity during a self-imposed exile in Los Angeles, is making a curious London comeback.

"But this time Morrissey has no album, no friends who'll clamber on stage to jam with him;"
Since when has Morrissey jammed on stage with friends - he's not Elton John you know!

"Fans will be shocked to learn that he prefers Gucci outfits to torn T-shirts and drives a Porsche."
Will we? Did anyone actually think he wears torn T-shirts.

"He has kept himself busy over the last few years by going on tour, including eight months in South America."
Ah, she must be talking about someone else!

"Nor is he as hermetic as he claims: he lives alone but has been spotted at musical events, or having dinner with his close friend Michael Stipe of REM, and, more bizarrely, Courtney Love."
Does he claim to be a hermit? Anyway the odd gig and a one-off lunch with Stipe and Love hardly makes him a publicity seeker.

"By crossing the Atlantic, he has avoided the humiliation of most waning pop stars - the obligatory appearances on pop quiz shows or a new career as a television presenter."
You don't have to leave the country to avoid these things - just say NO.

"Unless Morrissey changes direction, his future looks grim. He will become what he fears most: a mediocre shadow of his former self, playing old Smiths tracks in front of a decreasing and ageing audience, a genius trapped in his glorious past."
It's his refusal to change direction that is part of his appeal. His audience is actually increasing, hence the attendances at this years concerts.

These are the points that infuriate me the most about this article. I can tolerate constructive criticism about Morrissey but these lies and presumptions should never have been published. Lazy journalism from someone who's obviously never seen Moz perform and hasn't taken the time to find out what he stands for.

That being that the writer takes a more pragmatic approach to the "Morrissey is a racist" issue. Probably used the best quote in his defense, too.

Sadly, the rest was written with a tin ear and factual blindness.
