"Matter of Opinion" - lost Smiths track, according to Mike Joyce

I went to the event at The Garage Upstairs last night (Apr. 23) with Kevin Cummins, Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke. During the q&a, I asked Mike what material he had and if it was likely to see the light of day. He said there'd been record company interest in using what 'they' had and the material he had. He's also still looking at whether it will ever be possible to post it on his website.

He said that he had a Smiths track called 'Matter of Opinion'. Has anyone else heard of this?

Apparently, Johnny Marr had blocked a release of the Derby/ Old Grey Whistle Test gig whilst Morrissey was happy for it to go ahead.

We would have heard of this already by now. Just sounds like the "Arcana" hoax all over again and the title doesn't convince me. Think it's a wind up, it's not mentioned in The Severed Alliance. Don't hold your breath...

Great that there is more stuff - is this song is true - but it makes me laugh all these posts suddenly going "oh yeah, I've known about this for ages". Yeah right - then why hasnt anybody mentioned it before. There are that many fan sites surely SOMEBODY would have mentioned it if only as a vicious rumour like "Arcana"? I dont believe people who regularly visit this site knew and couldn't be bothered letting other people know considering some of the more trivial rumours that get put on here.

Just admit that nobody knows about this - we're all in the dark and we could all say "I've known about this song for months" but the reality is we didnt. We've no idea what its like, when it was recorded, who produced it or anything. Let's just wait and see instead of trying to outdo each other by claiming one upmanship. And if there ARE more songs you lot know about --- THEN TELL US NOW not in a few years after somebody else has mentioned them.

          old demo (Score:1)
My guess is that this is - at best - some rough instrumental. That also explains why Morrissey doesn't care if it's released or not. Maybe it's an early demo of a song that was later released under a different name.

              1. I'M POPPING OUT TO THE PAKI SHOP
Great early Moz lyric. Very PC. Can't think why it never got released.

              2. WHAT'S THE POINT OF SHARING?
Great early Moz lyric. Song ruined only by the rhythm section who keep stopping midway to give each other quizzical looks.

              3. CALL MY BLUFF AND LEAVE YOU BASTARD!
Written in May 1987. Can't quite fathom what this one is about.

              4. STEP INTO MY CAR (I'VE SOMETHING TO SHOW YOU LITTLE BOY)
Great early Moz lyric which in no way has anything to do with paedophiles.

              5. LINDER, OH LINDER, MY LOVELY LINDER
Great early Moz lyric which some idiots might think is about his mate Linder Sterling for reasons I personally cannot fathom.

              6. CHASE ME, I'M FREE, WHAT A GAY DAY!
Great early Moz lyric. Very ambiguous.

              7. HARK! ANNA!
Mistakenly referred to as Arcana. Great early Moz lyric about a chance encounter with newsreader Anna Ford whose footseps can be heard for some distance.

... all will be available as 30 second downloads on Audio Galaxy very shortly. You lucky people!
