I don't recall Scott Piering's death mentioned two years ago... Link from Tingle: Suitable Tribute To Scott by David Smyth - This Is London. Excerpt:
Scott Piering was a very popular bloke. The radio and television plugger for numerous popular bands of the past 10 years, the Minnesota native died from cancer, aged 44, two years ago. Last night, a glittering array of artists he had worked with gathered in King's Cross to pay tribute to his life and raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
...The majority played an acoustic set, including David McAlmont and Bernard Butler, who delivered a stirring version of Back to the Old House by The Smiths, whom Piering once managed.
--- charles byron was first to send the mention of the secret gig at NME.com:
according to NME "McAlmont & Butler make secret live return" (Apr.18) they covered "Back To The Old House" last night playing under the name of "Aly And The Pally's"
