The new (and excellent) digital radio station BBC6music had a poll for the best sub 2 minute record ever... and "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want." came in as Number 1! This was on the Gideon Coe show today Friday 5th April (weekdays 10 am - 1pm GMT) Billy Bragg's "Lover's Town Revisited" was voted 2nd best.

I must say that those songs are among the best ones ever recorded in England by 2 of the best songwriters that small island ever produced, I must say though that Billy has lots and lots of lovely short songs that should also deserve immense critical applause, just listen to Milkman of Human Kindness for instance.

Truly THE greatest under 2 minute song ever. It's the first song I ever heard of the Smiths, it appeared on the soundtrack of the "Pretty in Pink"-movie(we all have our demons), and it was a life changing experience. The composition, the lyrics but especially Moz's voice.
To me that voice expressed everything that has to do with what it's like to be human. It expresses how absolutely horrendous it is to be alive, and in some ways as well how fantastic it is to be alive. Moz's voice in that song has everything "in it": pain, longing, desire, humor, hope, irony, in short: life. It's a song of indescribable beauty. And whenever I hear it, I always think of what the philosopher Schopenhauer once said: To live is to want and to want is to suffer.
                        An absolute gem!

If you hear this song and you don't get a lump in your throat every single freakin' time you hear it, then you are a monster and you should be imprisoned.

by the way I'd have to say my favorite song is a fourway tie: still ill, barbarism begins at home, girl afraid and rubber ring!
