Camera Obscura includes Smiths reference in song

Brian Colin writes:

The Scottish band Camera Obscura ( very Belle & Sebastian-like; one track is even produced by Stuart Murdoch ) have made a Smiths reference in their song "Pen and Notebook" on their new CD Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi.

The line goes:
"You saved for a bass guitar...
You knew you'd made a mistake
when you first saw Marr"

Right up there with Belle & Sebastian's "Seymour Stein," I'd say.

C.O. is a lovely band, exactly the kind of band that our man should be listening to instead of…. well, you know whom… ;-)
“Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi” (yes, very Belle & Sebastian-like but IMO more “naïve” musically and lyrically) is probably one of the best releases from last year and “Eighties Fan” (entirely produced by Stuart Murdoch) a true gem that every indie-rock kid should give it a try.

I've just finished writing a piece about them for a greek fanzine. They're great! And it's great that you like them - why don't you go out and buy their album insteading of downloading all of their songs through the internet. The story is old, I know, but honestly, this is a small band on a indie label. I'm sure they could do with some more copies of their album being sold. You could try Melody Bar mail-order: www.apexonline.com/melodybar [apexonline.com] which is based in the UK and sells it for £8 (about US$12)

Nice to see Camera Obscura getting a bit of free PR through here. They're a fantastic band, and I think a lot of Smiths fans would enjoy their music. For anyone reading this who isn't familiar with them, think country-tinged C86 jangle-pop, a singer with a sexy Scots accent, and thoughful lyrics. Definately, "Eighties Fan" was the best single of last year IMHO.

And, as someone else said, "BUY THE ALBUM!" Camera Obscura are a *really* small indie band. Support them and their music. you can order from their label's site .... http://www.andmoresound.co.uk
                - whenever I do i get a nice little handwritten note with my order, and when I ordered the album they sent me a massive poster for being their more "distant fan".

Other bands in a similar vein would be Spearmint, Hefner and Tompaulin. All these bands released great albums last year, which should more than fill the gap in the current Morrissey-free environment.
