Five years ago today, on Feb. 12, 1997, Morrissey-solo was started - some thoughts and reflections...

I recall that day - the first person to visit the new site was a person from Scotland named Stuart. He emailed me to tell me after noting the counter on the index page. He was a frequent visitor and poster on the discussion boards in the early days but I have not seen him around in a while, at least a few years. However, I did hear somewhere that he met someone that responded to one of his posts on the site and they eventually got married.

I've gotten used to people coming and going. People move on with their lives or with their interests, and there are always new people getting on the internet or new fans discovering Morrissey and The Smiths. Like everyone else, I had no idea how this site would develop when I started it. One thing I didn't really think about was that people would actually meet each other and develop friendships and/or relationships, which I am always surprised to hear about. I have met many interesting people along the way (it's a bit like following the yellow brick road) - there have been some real characters with the most bizarre senses of humor.

The support I have gotten for the site from emails and from site visitors I've met in person has been nothing short of incredible. It is really the only thing that keeps me going. Having said that, I hesitate to take that much credit that people are willing to give me though - first of all it is Morrissey who has given so many subjects to talk about and second of all, the majority of the site's contents, the story and poll submissions, commentary, and even artwork are written/created by the site's visitors. So, the many compliments I receive reflect highly on both Morrissey and the contributors to the site. I am just in the background taking care of the unglamorous stuff (don't get me wrong, I greatly enjoy it and am always learning something new).

Well, it took 5 years but the site's format and code are finally in a stable state. I don't really have any big plans, but I will try to spend more time on original features and interviews. Regarding funding of the site, I believe I have made it through a personally uncertain time and should be able to handle it from now on. I still greatly appreciate all of those who stepped up and sent in donations towards the site last year but I am slightly embarrassed about asking for it now. All of it is in a reserve fund which is a great relief to have in case of emergency. If you donated in the past and could use your money back, I would prefer to return it to you, just let me know.

I don't have any idea if the site will survive another five years, but when the time comes to call it quits I think I will know. Sometimes it's hard to tell if we're just at the start or nearing the end. I wish I could be writing under more celebratory circumstances, there is the possibility of a tour as mentioned earlier, but otherwise it's been the slowest time as far as news is concerned in the whole five years. Again, thanks to those who have sent their support privately and publicly in the past - it is especially inspiring because I know that it is genuine. In the times I have strayed from the course there has always been someone to let me know and keep me focused. Although it is hardly ever understood or acknowledged outside this small circle, I know what I am working on is something good and easily worth all of my efforts.

Much thanks to the resident creative artist Graves of Jake for remembering the occasion with the above image of 5 Morrisseys holding up 5 fingers.

Well, I suppose all I can say is thank - you for all you've done. You're truly special.

It was, and still is, the best source to find out the latest about Morrissey as well as other related items. I first heard of Belle & Sebastian here, and now they are one of my favorite bands. I also heard of, my all time favorite book, "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" here. I have since recommended it to friends and they always love it as well. I don't ever post anymore, because of the cruel responses I have received. But I will continue to visit, and continue to benefit from it. Thank you for all your hard work. And thank you to those who have shared their knowledge with me.

Why are you giving such a heart warming soft written speach? I know, because the heat is on you at this moment. Instead of using his press pass to bring the world the first published photos of Morrissey's wonderful Oye Esteban! tour, David pressed his advantage to cozy up to Morrissey. The whole show long, I had to hold David's idle camera, while he petulantly pushed aside all the the offered hands and gifts from the lads at Ambitious Outsiders.

The person who toppled Morrissey part-ways into that concert was not a tall, strong, cinammon haired woman, but David in disguise. When he had Morrissey pinned on the stage, I saw him mouth several none-too-veiled threats that Morrissey better keep away from the Ambitious Outsider boys. A chillingly mimed knife-across-throat followed.

A few days later, David managed to get the Vegas show cancelled by running headlong into Alain's back at the previous night's show. It should be noted that he did this intentionally because he heard that the boys from Ambitious Outsiders were planning to interview Morrissey in Vegas the next day.

Thankfully, my last encounters with David were at the substitued Vegas shows. At the first show, in a fit of jealousy, David swooped down from the balcony and tried to tackle Morrissey from a hands and knees position because he "thought" he saw Morrissey making invitational gestures to one of the A.O. guys. You don't even want to hear how David exploded with envy and spite when he learned that one of the A.O. boys manage to get an intact West Ham Boys shirt.

I want to believe that David is just the hard-working, conscientious person who's kept this site one of the sharpest (bar none) on the Web, but I stopped watching X-Files years ago. These days, it's all about "reality" TV.

I said "Is it Sing Your Life?" and he said "Yeah!". The person I spoke to was Russ. I then explained that I had been trying to get in touch with SYL to become a member and Russ told me that he was sorry, but because of following Morrissey around, it was tough getting back to people. Well, anyway, I got my SYL and went home. I read it over and over again. I even contributed to SYL - which, I must say, I am very proud of.

As time went on and SYL came to an end, I kind of lost touch with everything. But, one day at a library, I searched for something about Morrissey on the net. I guess that was probably 1998 or so. Up came Morrissey-Solo. After recognizing Davidt's name and knowing full well that this was SYL (sort of ) on the net, I immediately signed in as "hand in glove". However, I didn't have my own computer at the time, so I didn't really get to visit the site often.

In Sept of 1999, I finally did get my own computer and I've visited this site everyday, many times a day, might I say.

David, In many, many, ways you've made some peoples lives a bit easier to get through - You've certainly made mine easier because I've got Morrissey-Solo to look forward to. I've met some wonderful people here including yourself. There really aren't any words that I can say that haven't already been said to you on this thread so far, so I guess I'll just have to settle for THANK YOU. And, that somehow doesn't even come close to what I feel.

*THIS* part of my life from SYL to Morrissey-solo have been the best 10 years of my life.
