Pete Yorn compares Strokes to Morrissey

In the new Entertainment Weekly issue #639 Feb. 15, 01 they have a small interview with Pete Yorn. They play him recent tracks and he commented on them (Britney Spears to Ryan Adams)

Here is what he said about The Strokes "The Modern Age", verbatim.

"I know this record very well...These are my favorite kind of drums-very straight. The ride cymbal comes in here....The chorus reminds me of Morrissey, the romantic way he delivers it...And this guitar part here-classic rock & roll."

    His cover of 'Panic' is absolutely fantastic. And he's right about The Strokes as well. They are the best American band since The New York Dolls!

    I wonder whether this guy is serious...the right cymbals? LOL...the drummer is just awful, no swing at all...as well as the rest of the band, just a marketing act based on the son of John Casablancas, to compare them with the Smiths is beyond lack of vision and taste is pure insanity if not a sin.

    .... by silly journalists who need fresh meat to put at the cover of their paper ( nme,...). the strokes add nothing new in the history of pop music. indeed, they just regress to the late 60's. what's the point to imitate the voice of lou reed at the beginning of his carreer?

    Strokes and Morrissey (Score:1, Interesting)
    Yes, when I first heard of The Strokes, I thought maybe they might have been inspired by Morrissey because some things are very similiar. But I sincerely doubt it. And the singer, Julian Casablancas seems to be against the things Morrissey stands for.
    I was reading some random quotes and The Strokes dont want to change rock and roll, they just want to play. "It's just the music". They said. Wasn't Morrissey so much more than just the music? Regardless I do like the Strokes an awful lot./ I have been listening to the same Britpop stuff for years and invite something new with open arms.

        Yea the strokes are good but im getting tired of their album after only a few months but you might agree it takes a lot longer to get tired of Morrissey/Smiths. I dont think there is any good reason why this guy can compare the Strokes to Moz, anyway their hardly making the same entry to stardom as Morrissey. I find the biggest relief on the Strokes is their actually quite different to music on the top theses days (what else can we buy) and are among the best chart toppers, the Smiths on the otherhand grazed the chart due mainly to thier pure class....
