Hefner's members "pretty much dislike The Smiths"

While looking for some information about Hefner’s new album Dead Media, I found this interview at Garbled Communications UK where guitarist Jack Hayter admits that most of Hefner’s members “very much dislike The Smiths”.

If you ask me, I find it pretty strange, especially after Ant defined The Smiths as one of the bands that inspired him to begin writing music. However, I still think that Hefner is a great band and in my opinion, Darren Hayman has written some of the best lyrics since the Man himself.

I agree hefner are one of my favourite bands also and the album the fidelity wars is in my top 5 albums ever.
Dead media was a disappointment though but i suppose it shows there versatility for trying different things.

It's funny ... when I bought 'The Fidelity Wars' I'm sure there was some sticker on the cover comparing them to The Smiths. Lyrically, Darren reminds me of a young Morrissey ... all bedsit angst and bile. Oh, and I *love* "Dead media" - I actually think it's their second best record after "The Fidelity Wars".

I think that sometimes bands say they dislike The Smiths as a knee-jerk reaction. Gene are an example of a band who got lumped in as the "new Smiths" and have never really outgrown that tag, even though their lateslt albums sounds nothing at all like The Smiths. Being called a "new Smiths" is as much of a curse as a blessing, and I guess hefner want to be liked/acknowledged on their own terms.

I really like all of the Hefner albums; my favorite is 'We love the city'. I'm also kind of surprised they said this, but Lawrence has a point - they are probably just tired of the comparisons. Besides, by now, they have enough of a body of work behind them that they can expect be judged on that alone....

I had to comment on this because Hefner is one of my absolute favorite bands. I'm even wearing their t-shirt right now. So when I read that little bit of news, I was a bit disheartened. But these comments in here made me feel a little bit better. I once, in an a comment mentioned Hefner on this site, and only was made fun of. How awful. I suppose that was when they were less well known. Its good to see fellow Hefner lovers now though. Oh, I think Breaking Gods Heart is my favorite. Back to Smiths though, still love em, even though I'm out of the 'nothing but smiths' faze. And, I must say, I get to go to my very first Morrissey-Smiths night quite soon. I'm finally in a place where such things are possible. Alaska isn't so good for Morrissey events of any kind.

On the sticker for The Fidelity Wars, somebody said 'the hymn for the alcohol was the best song the Smiths never wrote.' I actually think that's a bit strange.
