Smiths writes:

In a new biography about Nirvana's much missed front man Kurt Cobain written by Charles Cross, titled "Heavier than Heaven", in Chapter 16, on page 208 there is a Morrissey mention.

In describing a November 28th appearance on The Top of the Pops where Nirvana performed "Smells Like Teen Spirit", though only the vocals were live, a funny thing happened. Instead of trying to perform a near lip-synced rendition of the song, which was quickly becoming very popular, Kurt sang the song in the most slowed down seemingly Gothic sounding voice possible. If you have seen the "Nirvana Live Tonight Sold Out" video this show appears on that tape. Its the one where the fans are clapping to the beat, while Kurt in silly Sunglasses plays the guitar with no hands and sings as though he is heavily sedated. Guess who Kurt was imitating as he mocked the Top of the Pops?

From the book...
"Kurt hatched a plan with Novoselic and Grohl to make a mockery of their performance. As the backing track played, Kurt sang the vocals in a slowed-down, almost Vegas-like lounge version; he was attempting, he later claimed, to sound like Morrissey."
I find this amazing. Firstly that whole appearance and disrespect they showed the TOTP is one of the funniest things I've ever seen, and now that I know who Kurt was imitating makes it that much more enjoyable. Secondly it is a far as I know the only reference that shows Kurt Cobain knew who Morrissey was, which as a fan of both, for reasons unbeknownst to me, is comforting.

If you want to hear the song I know it appears on a bootleg, I don't remember which one, but it's probably on one of these boots.

  • In one of the old issues of Select magazine from 1992, Kurdt called that TOTP performance, "A tribute to Morrissey." It's the only time I recall him mentioning Mozzer.

  • This confuses me. I remember the performance very well. He had a throat infection or something, but they made him sing anyway because that was the new TOTP policy (incidentally Moz did 'My Love Life' the same 'karaoke' way as I remember). He just stood there and kind of growled, totally deadpan. I never thought there was anything more to it than that. I guess we're going back 10 years now, so maybe I don't remember the performance clearly enough, but it didn't seem like a very convincing Moz impression to me.

  • ..if indeed he intended too. Although Evan Dando did sing the last chorus to Mrs. Robinson on the same programme in a deliberately Morrissey fashion. Maybe they were just trying to set a trend.

Kurt Cobain was a big fan of Bowie, and also of C86 bands like The Pastels. (I think he once said The pastels were his favourite band) so he was obviously fairly well scholled on UK indie from the 80s. Also, Courtney Love was a Teardrop Explodes groupie, and once lived in the same falt as Ian Macculloch. It's pretrty plain that Morrissey would have know who Morrissey was, and probably would have been a Smith fan to some degree or other.

It seems that the site has exceeded their bandwidth limit.

  • Fact is both Courtney Love and Michael Stipe are good friends with The Mozz, so SURE Cobain knew who Morrissey was. Was he a fan?
If you listen to the mp3 it doesn't sound like Morrissey (who does anyway?,) but Cobain tries hard not to scream as he drags his voice as much as he can in a crooner-like manner.
Now remember - it's a TOTP's performance, it's England - how many crooners do you know of in there? Only one, The Mozz. It seems obvious to me.

I believe the Brave Ones are all connected - but not in a Morrissey-Diana kinda phenomena:
Bowie called the Pixies the band of the 80's; Marr called Nirvana the band of the 90's; Cobain wanted to be in the Pixies; both Frank Black and Morrissey have sang with Bowie; Cobain covered a Bowie song; Cobain confessed with Stipe; Stipe confessed with Morrissey; The Smiths influenced britpop; the Pixies influenced Grunge; etc etc etc...
They know and love each other. These are my heroes. I love them all.

  • It's no surprise (and really no matter) that Cobain knew of Morrissey. Whether he held him in esteem or not, his wife, Courtney Love claimed she "loves Morrissey!" During an impromptu signing outside a small venue in Louisville, KY, I asked her what she thought of Moz and that was her emphatic response. In fact, I think I recall reading that she claimed the same in some pop rag interview, and always ended up having to defend The Smiths, et al., to her punk wannabe friends. Anyway, maybe Kurdt wanted to mock Moz because of what he saw on TOTP, but at least he had a discussion or two about him with his wife.

  • I think it's hilarious the Kurt was taking the piss out of Morrissey. Morrissey on his own is completely fey joke, and must be sad that Nirvana kick the crap out of his solo career, unseating him as "Alternative God" and making his entire catalogue irrelevant. Kurt was the Truth in a way that Morrissey could have been if he had died in 1986. If Morrissey was so miserable and all that crap, why didn't he just end it instead of making a cash career out of it? Kurt was at the top of his career, with millions of adoring fans, critics sucking his cock, street cred if there was ever such a thing, everything that Morrissey ever dreamed of, and he blew his brains out. Now that's authenticity, that's a real obsession, that's art. Sorry Morrissey, but your ironic self-effacement and fey wanting is sadly passe when you're still alive and suing your band. Plus, you're a liar about your celibacy - deep inside, you're just another Boy George.
