it's a scary scene in NY right now, but it was even more so this morning. our communications and transportaion were immobilized for hours.

the WTC was so populated, from the thousands of employees, to the rooftop club, to the mini-mall on the lower level, the popular Century 21 department store and Marriott across the street, the subway station under the building carrying commuters from every NYC borough as well as path trains from New Jersey, to the tourists that crowd the area daily... the number of innocent people affected must be staggering.

my prayers to the victims, and my sincere hopes that all of the visitors to this site were not in the vicinity of the disaster, and that all of their friends and loved ones in the city are safe as well.

I can only hope that those who visit this site living in New York are all okay. This is hell on earth. How many thousands of innocent people died at the hands of a faceless, evil enemy of America? I hope that this is the end of the attacks. I don't know if I can take waking up tomorrow and having to go through this all again.

I used to live in New Jersey, and I visited the WTC recently, had dinner there. And now those beautiful towers are gone. I wanted to take my nephews there one day.
The phone lines aren't working properly, so I can't even get in touch with my friends there...

All the people who've died, this is the most horrifc thing I can remember happening in the world in my lifetime. It feels like this is the begining of the end of the world or something. I hope nobody on this site has been directly affected by any of the things which happened today.

This is a horriffic act and I can't really describe it.My sympathy goes to all the victims and their famalies. It's so sad for all those victims. I think we all ask ourselves: "How can a human or a group of people actually destroy so many lives? Don't they have a heart?" What really makes me sick is seeing footage of people in the middle east celebrating. How can you celebrate the deaths of thousands of people?

I live in n.y.c, and one of my friends was near the towers with his mother and the N.y.p.d starting yelling for everyone to run, and his mother starting screaming and everyone starting running. I saw allah ackbar graffitti before this,strangly...

any way most of the transportatin is cut so now iam hanging around but i rather be downtown somewhere in the area.

I'm no fan of the United States, but I am absolutely appauled by what has happend, and as I watched it live as it happened when the 2nd plane hit the 2nd tower, I began to shake. I sincerely hope that our American neighboors can overcome this absolutely incomprehensible act of terrorism,
and find the monsters responsible. This is a dark day for the human race and soul.

i'm overjoyed by the unity of this nation (and neighboring and oversea nations as well)...of the volunteers and those 200 plus NYC rescuers that gave their lives to help save the lives of those in the WTC.

a crisis like this brings perspective into our lives and eliminates the trivial things that consume us so often...i'm so sorry.

although we are now united in love and compassion for each other let us not become united in hate and anger...we cannot support the bombing of any country if it will result in the lives of more innocent....their blood will not bring retribution for the blood of our innocent.

unfortunately, life doesn't stop in the wake of crisis...it should. we live in a society so self centered and disconnected; people "don't care"...

There are simply no words I can think of to describe the sadness and terror that I feel for those who have lost their lives, and for those who have lost loved ones. The empathy I feel who those who are injured, but will live to remember this day for the rest of their lives. But, especially the sorrow I feel for the children who experienced this day and who no longer have their parents for love, comfort, care, and happiness. Many, many, lives have been destroyed - for nothing.

This as been a horrific day for America - Justice will prevail.

I almost can't believe it, it's too terrible for words. How will the U.S react to this? I hope it doesn't lead to more destruction of innocent lives.

i remember the OK. City bombing, the L.A. riots, and many more tragedies. but those all happened when i was still a little boy. i'll be 18 next month and for the first time i'm actually stunned. for the first time i feel empathy for the people hurt in this tragedy.

i ask anyone who reads this comment to just get the idea of "revenge" out of your mind. we're not going to help any by murdering 50,000 innocent people halfway around the world. first thing is first, help your brothers and sisters in need. as cheesy as this sounds "2 wrongs don't make a right", and i can't help but agree with leedoggpimp, "sorrow will come in the end."

Morrissey loves the US now, loves New York and loves Los Angeles. Will he hate us Muslims now? I feel bad my religion is responsible but not all believers of Allah are bad and kill people. The Islamic are a peaceful people like Morrissey. I hope He will not hate us now because he is my favorite singer and means so much to me. I have spent the better part of the day trying to come to terms with what has happened. My wife and I were watching live TV. This morning when the second plane struck the WTC. At that very moment, I believe that the world changed forever. Never again will we feel truly safe on our own soil. I don’t suggest that we become a nation living in fear, but clearly, the rules have been restated. Several posts here on m-solo have disturbed me a little if not a lot but I shall not use this forum to stir debate. I spent a good portion of my evening listening to a call in talk radio show and the vibe seems to be strike fast and hard. I hope that the U.S. and George dubya don’t decide to willy-nilly annihilate any innocent lives. I know that the gut reaction is to be angry and vengeful but killing more innocent people, whomever or wherever they are is not the solution. I wish I had a solution. I don’t. I have some very strong opinions regarding why this happened and why it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone but out of respect to the dead and wounded I shall refrain. Anyone who is familiar with the work of Howard Zinn may understand what I feel. I leave with sympathy to anyone who may have been hurt or traumatized by today’s events and the assurance that this will pass. Even though it may feel like it, this is not the end of the world.

Today was a completely devastating, sorrowful, and horrific day. What can I say that hasn't been said before? This day will forever remain in our minds, and the tragedy of all those pointlessly lost lives will forever be in our hearts. Of course, a natural reaction to this terrible crime is retribution. But it truly saddens me that schools have been shut down because of the fear of race riots. Not all Muslims are against the United States...but it is unfortunately true that some are. My friend is dating someone who is Muslim, and he is outraged and saddened by what has occurred. Some of the Muslim sects are peaceful people, who oppose war and fighting at all costs. I only hope that we pull together with our fellow citizens, not against them. Justice will and should come to those who are responsible for this hideous act. Whoever caused this atrocity should be punished fully for what they have done so intentionally and so callously. My prayers, thoughts, sympathies, and my heart are with those who have suffered, and to those who will. Hatred is never the answer.

well, i hope most people by now have realized that this attack was carried out by the death-sect known as islam. although not all muslims openly support this act of violence upon innocent people, the main goal of their evil religion is to attain world domination. their sick and twisted ideology gives them the right to kill everyone who doesn't convert. don't say it's all about the middle east, that's just the first step. they'll be knocking on your door sooner or later (and for some americans they already have).

The worst thing that could come out of this is a destruction of freedom. In the UK, almost all of the worst curbs on liberty have come, precipitously, in the wake of an outrage or crisis. In the US, war lead to the internment of thousands of innocent japanese Americans. Freedom, once lost, is very difficult to restore.

We're still in the middle of the dust clouds. Just hope that the world waits for them to clear before taking stock and moving on.

As much as I love Mr. Morrissey, I'm satisfied that this was the top news story here. It deserves our full attention. The families of those lost deserve our sincere respect and compassion. We are all so sorry.

First and most of all I am also terribly shocked about this....I still can not believe it....My sympathy goes to all innocent people, who were killed just because they are Americans.....
However, I would like to take the opportunity to express a different political view of this horrible event:
As a person living in Greece (i.e. very close to Middle East region), I have no doubt of the intense and sometimes violent aspects of muslim religion.On the other hand, I know that disasters with thousands of innocent victims are part of the daily routine in places like Palestine or Iraq and this is due to military or political US goverment actions on most of the occassions.Thousands of children still die in Iraq, due to the medicine embargo against them. However, only a few western people sympathise those poor unfortunate Iraqis.......It is so sad to see people cheering after this horrible tragedy, but all of you should think a bit further: the palestinian or iraqis (or whatever) that you saw on CNN yesterday are not some crazy, ugly lunetics;these people have suffered from death, loss, poverty, ilnesses throughout all their lives, due to "civilised" world actions. Now they are happy about the killing of innocent Americans, but they don't know.To their eyes, we are all responsible for their misery and this is not completely untrue. Furthermore, do not forget that people like Landen, Hussein, Milosevic were heavily supported by the US in the past. All of these monsters were in fact created by secret agents of the "free world".....They were good friends then and in return they would get the technology, the weapons, the money, the political support......
Now the monsters have turned against the people who created them....(in fact, against completely innocent people......).....
So I am asking:
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS MESS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD?
Against my sympathy to all the innocent victims no matter if they are Americans, Africans, Palestinians, Muslims, Ugly, Rich or whatever.....
It's very easy to critisise people from your comfortable living room, but there are millions of people out there who live and behave like wild animals, simply because they never had the opportunity to do otherwise.....

That's the only thing we must do.

the best thing would be if the US together with Russia and China bombed the living daylight out of Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.

All these events are horrible and surely noone could ever have expected them to happen. I feel sad for the people who died and for their families. Killing innocent people is not acceptable for any reason.

When something like this happens it is reasonable to assume that there is something horribly wrong in our world. Searching for people who did this might be comparatively easy because they are human beings and can be physically arrested and eventually slain by the Justice. But will that be the end for the terror and will that solve the problem lying underneath? I don't think so. I think that this is a clear message for the American people, there is some people in the world who don't like you. Some people whose toes you have stepped on. People who you have used when you have built your glorious society. How long did you think that you can live in peace, without caring for the problems of the outside world while exploiting the people living in third world countries and making you great? You thought that you can use them without any limit to get yourself all the prosper and the power in our small world. Have you considered why you are so rich and powerful? Is it because you are just so much better than other people in the world? Wake up, we are all the same, we have to take care of each other. It's easy to find faults in other people, but not easy to admit that "we were asking for this".

I don't blame any American private citizen, I've met some of you and always enjoyed your company. And truly I feel sad and frightened. This is the ultimate moment for our whole humanity. World will never be the same after this and we have several different paths now to choose. I sincerely hope that we can learn something. If we don't, we have lost maybe the most important moment in our history to make life better for all people in our globe. Vladimir Putin and Yasser Arafat were the greatest people to appear in television yesterday and I hope that George W. will take mature stand in this issue and all my support goes to him now (although I earlier was always against him). We have a chance now to find cooperation between all these parties. We don't need war now (or ever), noone wants it. Still many times it happens committed by those very same people who didn't want it. Revenge should be out of question, it doesn't do any good for anyone. We should make sure that our leaders won't make this situation any worse. Muslims are the same as we are, they have the same God as we (jews and christians) have, it is all just a matter of interpretation. They don't know God any better than we do and vice-verca. Could human being ever know God that well that he could tell about him or even write a book? God can't be translated to any human language, all opinions about Him are all equally incomplete, we shouldn't be fighting for it (that only shows our weakness). If it appears that people who did this are muslims, it doesn't mean that whole muslim world will accept this and we shouldn't blame them.

People who have lost some loved ones, although how impossible it sounds (written by someone so far away from there), please forgive those who committed this. Revenge don't make it any better.

Although how horrible this all is, I'm feeling optimistic for the future. We have to consider our values again, how important money and success are compared to peace and life. Maybe tomorrow we live in the better world, we can if we want.

We are shocked here in America. The streets elsewhere in America, outside of NYC and Washington D.C., are quiet. The mood is one of sadness. We are filled with anxiety as we wait to hear of any possible survivors, and we think of rebuilding even as we think of justice. I thank you for reaching out to us with your concern. Currently, we are conscientious to protect our American citizens of Middle Eastern descent- and we are not a country of revenge. Yes, we are angry. Very angry. And, yes, we are all filled with a quiet resolve to seek justice and to do what need be done to stop terrorism. It cannot be one target, or one military action that stops such madness. It is more in the unity of many countries; together, making a stand that says, "No More!" I have heard talk of our exploitation of third world countries, that we may be getting what we deserve. Remember this, those who would condemn us- we are human. I would not judge the individuals of England based on the decisions of their Parliament. Real people have been killed, and we do not seek innocent lives in retribution. We are reeling from the tradegy, but we are also thinking human beings. To seek revenge would be to act as our cowardly faceless enemy has acted. I can now only pray that we find survivors, regardless the odds. I know that we Americans are an arrogant lot. There is no question of that. We have ALL lost our innocent sense of safety, that we had when standing on our own soil, and that is now forever gone. Something that all you in Europe have never known as we have. One day at a time. Thanks for letting me rant.

In his many public religious edicts, Bin Laden has urged all Muslims to go out and kill Americans. Was that not enough to have this Beast killed? Any ultra-fanatic religious or otherwise group who threatens violence must be dealt with. I travel on a weekly basis and we're constantly reminded by signs posted outside of security areas that even joking about hijacking will be considered as a threat and dealt with. Why not use the same philosophy when dealing with terrorism?

A lot of things are going to change in the next decades my friends. The fact that it took an event like this to have people speak to their neighbors and strangers is sad. Career, money, Morrissey don't matter.........love each other, tolerate and cherish the differences in color, religion. Debate your disagreements with diplomacy and empathy.

I think its horrific what happened in New York. I believe that the U.S should punish all who are responsible. Maybe now we can find that monster Bin Laden and do away with him. I believe that killing him would not be enough; we should torture him slowly and make him go through the pain and suffering that all the people in the planes and buildings went through. I also think that it is sad what the palestinian people are doing in their country and how they can find happiness(i.e, dancing in the streets after this horrible and cowardless attack) in this massive tragedy. I hope justice can prevail. What has the U.S done to these countries. I don't know how this day in age so much hate still goes on.

is to see the people who jumped off the towers..when I saw that My heart sank!! and all the 911 attempts in the airplanes..the one's who talked with their loved ones on the plane before they died..hearing that I couldn't help it.. but just to cry.

I really don't know what to say. I'm sad about this, but not scared. I read the list of confirmed dead and felt deep sympathy for the families of the innocent people involved. I am mourning those people that traded their lives to help the victims.

I hope a feeling of peace for all of us can help clear our minds and figure the best way to handle this and whatever else there is to come.

i supposedly had a 2nd cousin (whom i never met) that was among the 340 firefighters killed when the 1st tower went down. my cousin who lives in the village, and has yet to get back (other than to get some clothes and his cat), was very lucky that day. he usually walks to work right up canal st. That day he had an early meeting uptown, but from his vantage point in the verizon bldg (about 38th and park I think), he saw the whole thing go down. david: why is this thing so sensitive to caps?

I just wanted to say thank you to David T. for posting this.I think it`s helpful to talk about this horrific tragedy.And to be able to leave our condolences.I found most of the most of the posts here to be very thoughtful and kind to those of us here in the states.So also thank you to those who did leave posts like that.And I know that this affected people everywhere not just here so it`s nice to know that people are being so considerate and thoughtful of each other.

Much compassion to the innocent victims of this horrific tragedy...but on a side political note i'd like to recommend that george jr. dump his glamorous *star wars* project and throw some cash at airport security. Oh, how about that cash that gets shipped to Israel, for starters. Oh and one more thing(really i'll shut up soon), stop training whackos like Bin Ladin(former CIA)and selling last years model weapons to anyone wearing fatigues. It's not all jr's fault, but he is the president.

I have mostly been impressed by the the kind thoughtful posts that people from all over the world have written on this subject.But some of the posts here have disturbed me.I was born a Catholic but that`s not what matters here.The racist comments have been disturbing to me.It`s a very dangerous thing to lump one faith or race all together.Their are zealots and fanatics in every faith.Granted I`m not familiar with the Muslim faith but I would venture to say that most of them are peace loving people.And dissaprove of these horrific events.Spreading more hate helps no one.I know people are angry about this and rightly so but again spreading more hate helps no one.We should focus on the needs of those who have been affected by this tragedy.Here`s a poem that kind of inspired me to write this post.It`s by Maya Angelou.
