An article in the Manchester Evening News announces that the Salford Lads Club failed to get funding for renovation and should be demolished and rebuilt. Perhaps all the bricks removed as souvenirs by Smiths fans have weakened the structure. Read about it at:

Battle to save legendary building

Excerpt:
Salford Lads Club -- a 97-year-old institution on the Ordsall Estate -- earned legendary status when 1980s cult band The Smiths used it for a photo shoot.

  • That would be hell! That's like a piece of musical history...They need to save it! I need to visit it before I die!

Wonder what Messrs Morrissey, Marr, Rourke and Joyce are thinking about the situation...Anybody think they should chip in a few quid to save it? Let's face it - none of them are hardly short of a few pound, are they?

  • My humble opinion in our society of backwardness and unfulfilled dreams and hopes is that Stephen should assemble the guys (John, Mike and Andy) and do a benefit or tribute gig for the preservation of the building. I dearly wish you are reading this, Stephen, and will be able to picture yourself fighting for the cause, as a rebel with plenty hot sauce! All agree? Then on your way, lads, to the rescue of the club!

I hope I will hear and see you play in Machester.

  • I have to agree Steven and the gang should set aside their differences for just one night and try and save this place.I would give anything to see The Smiths playing at the Salford Lads Club.

True friends stab you in the front.
  • I think these ideas of a re union are rather fanciful. However ther is something any of us who care can do. The article invites e-mail responses, and is clearly sympathetic to the re-furbishment rather than demolition cause.
So if enough interested fans e-mailed their support of this idea then the Manchester Evening News would have something to present to the lottery commission on the behalf of SLC. I have already done so and i hope others will. I just wish i'd made this appeal earlier as I fear most people will be finished reading this item now and the chance to keep one of the central pieces of our Smith heritage may slip away.

  • I think the Sweet and Tender Hooligans should play there and all the proceeds should go to saving the club. Let's all take a deep breath and admit the Smiths will never be again. But SATH can help. Visit there web page at:
