"Anyone checking the guest book entries recently will have noticed a small rash of notes left by irate Morrissey fans, responding somewhat belatedly to my 'Miserable Lie' article. Obviously it's up to people to respond to anything I might write in any way they see fit, it's just that it is somewhat depressingly irritating to realise there are still people who think that the fact that somehow, because Morrissey can sell out any number of shows anywhere in the world, including London, it makes any difference to my assertion that for some time he has seemed to me to be a rather vulgar and objectionable figure. I'm sure Travis sell more records in the UK than Morrissey does, so does that mean I'm not allowed to tell the world that I find them to be the worst kind of indie-bores imaginable? As for 'Any excuse to write more lies', well that one had me re-reading my article looking for glaring factual inaccuracies, and sad to say I couldn't find any. Everything that I assumed Smiths/Morrissey fans would take objection to were opinions and yes, opinions that were somewhat exaggerated to get across the point that the Smiths were, and continue to be, one of the most over-rated bands in the history of Pop. Which isn't to say that they could make an awesome noise and were, you know, culturally important, but fuck it, if people were too thick to read that in the article then saying it again here isn't going to help, is it? As for the crass suggestion that I die with all my hip hop records by my side, well that is frankly one of those comments which simply makes the impression that Morrissey and his fans are inherently racist characters with deep rooted xenophobia all the easier to believe."

    to some (all) extent I agree with Mr Fitchett, visitors to this site who call themselves fans can be outright disrepectful and tasteless...although i dont think we will really know what was posted in the guestbook since it seems to have been censored.

    but honestly I don't expect much more from someone running a website called "tangents." reminds me of the of the name of that show (i've never seen, thankfully) The View.

        Hold on... does anybody really care about what this guy thinks? I mean, who is he?

        And what does it matter if he listens to Hip-Hop or Drum and Bass? That is totally irrelevent.

        BUT... I personally don't give a crap what anybody thinks of The Smiths or Morrissey. Specially some guy who runs a website and then claims The Smiths to be overrated. He really has no idea. So, let's leave him to it.

        OK, I think he has a point, and anyone bothering to spam his guestbook really needs another hobby.

        However, something I really take issue with is the assertion that Mr Fitchett makes that a dislike for hip-hop implies racism/zenophobia. personally, I *do* really dislike hip-hop. however, I LOVE virtually all early Motown records, Stevie Wonder, Isaac Hayes, Marvin Gaye, David McAlmont ...... I could go on. It was a stupid thing to say. Just because you don't like Woody Allen doesn't make you an anti-semite.

        Objectively, it's an issue of talent to me (Score:1, Insightful)
        Being a social worker, I may be a little twisted for being such a devoted Morrissey fan,but racist, I'm not. At present, I'm in my late 30's and I grew up frequenting the dark alternative clubs. Years ago, there were black groups that were played at the clubs because they actually sang music and played instruments. It was great! But now, black or white, practically anyone can participate in bee-bop music because for the most part, you don't have to know how to sing, play an instrument, or know anything about music composition. It does take talent. But to me it is art, not music. Frankly, most of the lyrics are distasteful, and simple. Ten year olds and moran's on the Jenny Jones show can perform bee-bop. You don't have to know how to sing or play a single note! It's perfect for the musically illiterates who are too lazy or incapable of learning real music. I realize that many young Moz fans are into bee-bop. That's cool. At least they are intelligent enough to appreciate real music too. But bee-bop to me is music that people have become conditioned to to the point that they enjoy it very much. But the reality is that you don't have to be a musician to create bee-bop music. The Smiths/Morrissey solo is above that.

          Well yes I have to agree that some hip-hop does stink but there are great underground acts who have great lyrical talent. Being a Moz fan myself I do enjoy different genre's of music rather than going "Well i'm Black so I have to listen to Rap and R&b music". I find music to be great in different aspects.

            I think it was wrong for some of those Moz fans to say I hope you die with all your hip hop records at your side.Because as I`ve said before it does give ammunition to the simpletons that made those accusations against Morrissey.But it was very wrong for that person to say that this makes Morrissey and Moz fans look like racists.On the contrary Moz fans I think are a rather diverse group.There`s all different ethnic backgrounds,gay,straight,guys,girls,rockabilly`s ect.And how can anyone who plays Maya Angelou reciting her poem`s before his show`s and proclaimed his love of sixties motown girl groups be racist.It doesn`t add up. And It`s really not fair to say if you don`t like rap that makes you a racist.I don`t like it (but I do like sixties soul music).It`s just not my cup of tea .And in no way am I prejudiced or racist.I think it`s this guy who seems to have a problems with Morrissey and Moz fans.Moz said it himself "and your prejudice won`t keep you warm tonight".

              smiths is soo "overated", bands have to justify there terrible theft of "how soon is now".
              If the Smiths are overated stop stealing that song you disgusting techn no-souls.
