An amusing item on last night's Channel 4 News (19/7/01). The headline story was of the infamous British politician/author Jeffrey Archer being found guilty of perjory and being sentenced to 4 years detention at Her Majesty's Pleasure. As the soundtrack to Channel 4 News report The Smiths "This Charming Man" was played; considering the subject matter highlighting the "he knows so much about these things" line.

While amusing it also highlights the continued influence of this band in the UK: the opening narration used several key events to jog the public's memory on the year in question; the first reference being: "The year was 1983, The Smiths were in the charts, etc etc"

"This Charming Man" was played on Britain's BBC2's "Top Gear" programme, whilst the presenters were test-driving the latest MG-Rover 25! (Thursday 19 July, 8.30)

If you ever watch KCET, the local PBS station here in Los Angeles, they are always playing insturmental portions of Smiths/Morrissey songs in their "coming up next" spots between shows. Watch Huell Howser somtime at 7:30 and you'll probably hear it after the show ends. This is a case where there is a fan working at the station.
