The Smiths briefly on VH-1's "25 Years of Punk"

tibby writes: This is extremely trivial but here goes. I was watching "25 years of punk" on VH-1 the other night and they discussed the years between punk and grunge. They showed a few tiny clips of The Smiths. They were from the "How Soon Is Now" video, the part when Johnny Marr is giving Morrissey a guitar lesson. And they also had a segment about the New York Dolls.

Mexcellent also writes: This reference to the The Smiths is so small that it hardly seems worth mentioning but VH-1 is airing an hour long program called "25 Years of Punk". With about 10 minutes left to go in the show the narrator is claiming that New Wave is a mellowed down and more commercial version of Punk. While he is saying this on screen there is a montage of pictures of bands that were popular in the 80s and there is the briefest clip of Johnny Marr teaching Morrissey to play the guitar from the "How Soon is Now" video. If you blink you will miss it, seriously it is that short.

    just proof that VH-1 doesn't know what 'punk'is (Score:1)
crass, sex pistols, (early) joy division/warsaw, dead kennedys, new york dolls, ramones...definitely punk.

    but the smiths?!?! considered 'punk'?

sure, the smiths are products of the punk (among a number of other influences) and can be categorized in the post-punk genre. it's also known that that a number of members had a punk-music background. (from what i remember, mike joyce and morrissey were in punk bands before the creation of the smiths).

and sure, there are songs that definitely have a 'punk-like' sound, but still, that's not enough to consider the smiths 'punk'.

I can remember all of my brothers friends coming over, and they were all fans of "new wave" which I always called "post modern" because of Mtv. A lot of them listened to Bauhaus,The Cure, and The Smiths, but they looked like Goths and you'd think that bands like Bauhaus was all they listend to...it was all labeled by your type of dress in those days. You were either "preppy" and listend to, well, Debbie Gibson, or you were "punk" and listened to the bands that you had to dig to find. Unfortunately, The Smiths fell into that category. Those were good times, though...I loved my brothers friends.
