Sparks on mentioning rap to Morrissey
posted by davidt on Wednesday April 25 2001, @10:00AM

Curtis Mayfield writes:

On the Q website, Sparks chose their recommended albums, and when commenting on Beastie Boys 'Licensed to Ill' Ron said:

"A lot of people derided Elvis as being watered down, but he brought something amazing to his music. The Beastie Boys were the rap equivalent. I liked the attitude and the brashness, just as I enjoyed Public Enemy for being so over the top. We met Morrissey in LA and made the mistake of mentioning how much we liked rap. That was the end of that conversation."

I've heard that comment from Morrissey regarding rap music. I think most people that like rap started listening to bad rap (Eminem, Puffy, Wil Smith) and eventually found the good stuff. I kinda wonder Moz would think of the good stuff if he ever listened to it.. (Fugees, Roots, Common)

even tiring age-old has-beens like paul weller have expressed at least a nod of respect towards rap, or its pioneers. i don't expect morrissey to start crip walking and tipping some gin for his dead homiez, but his ignorance towards the genre annoys me.

so he stopped talking to the sparks, who otherwise i'm sure he would have been interested in conversing with, on the basis of them liking rap? that sounds like an unhealthy dislike to me and one that borders on prejudice. how would you feel if people stopped a conversation with you if you said you liked morrissey? you'd think they were a prick. well...he's doing just that but regarding an entire genre.

I have also had my musical taste insulted in some email I have recieved on from people on this site. I have been commended for liking Belle and Sebastian, but told liking Tribe Called Quest was a crappy preference. No one should ever have to defend the type of music they like, it's call PERSONAL PREFRENCE, it's all about freedom of choice. I choose to enjoy all types of music, and I think you have not lived until you have seen Biz Markie spinning between sets of De La Soul, Pharoah Monkch, and Talib Kwali. I have never seen a more diverse group of people enjoying themselves together despite their differences. I believe that hip hop is where music is going, it unites people of all ages and races. Open your minds a little and quit following the crowd. At least be open up to the fact that different people like different things.
