Antony Harding (Hefner’s drummer) mentioned The Smiths as one of the bands that inspired him to begin writing his own music.

Hefner are a wonderful band. Darren Hayman writes some of the most wonderful relationship confessionals ever. Perfect music for the intelligent and broken hearted.

Having said all of that, he also has a wonderful sense of humor and self-irony.

I can safely vouch for Hefner as well.. If you like quirky British indie music, then this is a place for any Smiths Morrissey fan to dwell as well.. as heirs to the bedsit angst mantle.. (although they have been accused of sounding like 6th form boys putting poetry to music)

There is a view that suggests the albums can be 'patchy' affairs (not necessarily a view subscribed to by myself) but there are some indispensible lyrical and musical moments that you must hear (or own)..

'Breaking Gods Heart' is good.. standout track 'The Sad Witch' (dedicated to Thatcher at a gig I was at), 'Boxing Hefner' featuring the awesome 'Christian girls' and anthemic 'Pull Yourself Together'.. current release 'We Love The City' more accessible (possibly) and featuring 'The Greedy Ugly people' (some of those we know!!).. and possibly the best album, 'Fidelity Wars'..

..and of course, you get excellent 'pop art' work on the sleeves.. And without stating the obvious, the bands live performances are really enjoyable, approachable and intellignet and funny guys with no ego...

..and yes, I have met them and seen them several times.

by the way, Hefner & Ant are NOT Britpop bands!
so, if you’re SO iggorant, try not to make it SO evident
