Badly Drawn Boy covered a bit of 'Oscillate Wildly' at his gig at the Royal Albert Hall last night (April 6).

Badly Drawn Boy's cd, Bewilderbeast, has got to be the most infectious cd i've heard since Bona Drag first came along. I find myself rotating this cd over and over and enjoying it more and more each time. If you don't already have this, pick it up and see for yourself. Enjoy...

I know he did a version of this one couple of years ago in Peel Session. Anyone got a copy of this recording? (I'm desperately collecting all kinds of Smiths/Moz covers.)

        BDB's shambolic Live Shows (Score:1)
I adore "The Hour of Bewilderbeast", but I think Badly Drawn Boy's live shows are insultingly awful.

You stand for 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours as he attempts to dazzle us with his comedy routine. His music? What music?! He's too busy stuffing towels in his crotch, pulling them out, throwing them into the audience and saying, "it has revitalizing juices". Really clever, hah?

When he finally gets around to playing his songs--songs which on the album had a real emotional impact on me--he plays them with little or no emotion. But everyone here (I can only speak for the audience he had in Hollywood) was absolutely taken by his "charming" displays of crude humor.

I discourage anyone from seeing BDB live. I'm all for a fun show, I don't think you have to be dour to be sincere so I'm not going to stand for any responses which accuse me of being a "prudish Morrissey fan". But I do believe that BDB has to concentrate on the music first. Once he masters actually delivering his lovely songs with sincerity and warmth then he can wipe his crotch as many times he wants in between songs. Until then I really hope he stays off the road and in the studio.

        Oh, and one last thing...

Many might feel that what is charming about BDB shows is not the actual humor but the spontaneity of his shows. Too many bands just show up paint by the numbers, as it were. Okay, fine. But ummm...he used the towel in the crotch "joke" in Chicago, L.A. and countless other places. In short, there is nothing spontaneous about his stupid routine.

What does this have to do with the simple claim that he covered Oscillate Wildly? Nothing, just had to get that off my chest! :)
