Channel 4 program: Top 10-greatest guitarists of all time.
output on 24 / 3/ 01 (10pm.) in the UK.
No scoop i know, but the Johnny Marr section on the greatest guitarists of all time was fantastic! He was placed at number 10 - which was great considering the legends that lay alongside him.
He was on for 10 mins. from the hour and a half show, talking about Morrissey, the Smiths break up, Electronic (eek) and the new combo, The Healers.. they even played his new material for a minute , which sounded pretty good.
They also showed rare footage of Mozz and Marr circa '83. Morrissey was actually laughing...
Rourke appeared for a minute and a whole host of stars praising the work of The Smiths...(well chuffed.)
As for the top 10 itself... Jimi Hendrix was no. 1 and Clapton no.2. ...no appearance by modern day contemporaries that may be lesser known as some of the input was based on record sales alone, hence even Hank Marvin made the final 10. Others included - Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Brian May .... even Noel Gallagher appeared humble when he said he couldn't believe the things Marr did with a guitar, amazing stuff...

They make it seem like Morrissey never laughs or something. He has laughed or sneered in nearly every radio interview I have heard. He isn't depressed, just deprived of his own happiness.
Johnny Marr definately deserves to be in the top ten guitarists of all time, other guitarists will know how difficult it is to try and play songs like This Charming Man and Girl Afraid along with many others.
I thought what Bernard Butler said was pretty amazing: that he kept listening to the Smiths for hours and hours in his room and that his life would have been totally different if he hadn't have this close "relationship" to their music. I assume he meant he wouldn't have played the guitar so well or not at all!!! All in all the Marr slot in the program was great, I don't care much for rock guitarists so that was by far the best bit of the program for me!
I noticed that of the 10 minutes, about 8 and a half were given over to the Smiths, before Johnny said in the interview "you are going to mention the rest of my career" (ie the last 15 years!). Cue a rapid run though of 10 seconds the the clips and a brief mention of the healers. Matt Johnson was on, saying that he thought it a terrible mistake when Johnny started playing synth, as everyone loved him for his guitar playing.

I started playing at 12 (im 32 now) and was influenced by Tony Iommi of Black sabbath and Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple. My playing drastically changed since the Smiths. Capos are good. Also, there's has never been a band where I respected every single musician. The closest was sabbath (except for Ozzy).
My main influences now are JM, Ritchie, Wes Montgomery, Bach.
