Johnny Marr - "Top 10 Guitarists" on channel 4 (UK - Mar. 24)
posted by davidt on Wednesday March 21 2001, @10:00AM

Craig is a poet writes: Johnny Marr will have his own segment dedicated to him on Channel 4's (UK) "All time top ten" series. It's unclear at what position Johnny is rated at on the top ten guitarists but the programme is on this Saturday (24th March) at 10pm.

SuedeStation also writes: On Saturday March 24 Bernard Butler (ex. Suede) will be appearing on the Channel 4 (UK) programme called 'Top Ten Guitar Players'. Please check your listings to confirm the time. Bernard will be discussing Johnny Marr...

Please don't forget Brian Setzer!! And Keith Richards. (Yes, he is old and all that, but, well, do you play better?)
And Marc Bolan wasn't bad. BB King? Robert Plant!!

I suppose it's all about taste and what you focuse on. Are you complete immersed in so called pop music, or do you also like bands like Zeppelin or Hendrix?
Should we focuse on pure playing technique - how fast one can play or whatever - or should one concentrate on pure songwriting?

I think that Marr does deserve the recognition, but to the Moz fans out there who are leaving out the great musicians NOT related to Morrissey or the Smiths- come on! Bands like The Who, The Beatles, Hendrix, and yes- even the fellow from Guns and Roses, have featured some of the greatest guitar players ever. I mean, there are many like Clapton or Page that should be at least respected by Moz fans. Talent is talent, even if the guys never played with Morrissey.

Good program on Saturday night... Presented by the crafty cockney members of one chord wonders 'The Quo'.. it was prsented in a light hearted and informative manner..

Johnny Marr was number 10 in the hit parade and came across very well.. He has certainly improved with age.. and the footage of early Smiths recordings was brilliant to see.. This included an interview at a 'primary school' where the young Children sang 'This Charming Man'..

Brilliant.. Johnny was so good in his day.. a genius.

johnny hardly played guitar for so many "post-Smiths" years. I understand he has a new band now and they've got that Oasis type of sound. Has anyone heard them? anyhoo, his Smiths stuff was tops! the best! bernard butler is great too. I've met him twice, very humble. graham coxon, jonny greenwood, george harrison, blah blah...
