STROKE ME IF YOU'VE HEARD THIS ONE BEFORE
MORRISSEY and members of HOLE and REDD KROSS gathered at the DRAGONFLY CLUB in HOLLYWOOD last night (March 13) to watch The STROKES, the highly rated NEW YORK five-piece, play their first LOS ANGELES show.

The Strokes, who to date have released just one EP, 'The Modern Age', in the UK, were supporting Doves at the club. Doves themselves showed their appreciation for the band by pogoing wildly during the Strokes' track 'Last Nite'.

Meanwhile, The Strokes, who played their first major UK gig in early February at the NME Carling Awards show at London Astoria, will return for a more comprehensive tour in early May. Dates have yet to be finalised.

The band have also been at work at Sear Sound Studio in New York recording the follow-up to 'The Modern Age'. Though currently untitled, it will be released through Rough Trade to coincide with a late spring tour.

The Strokes will also play at the South By Southwest festival in Austin, Texas on Friday (March 16).

Get real , you want Morrissey to continue hanging with the same eccentrics, you want him to continue being off the wall? I don't, i hope he takes in what he sees , discovers a business sense and a direction. Too many times has he been on the brink, only to retreat to his mums ill, or cancel tours No he needs to see how the more brazen (Hole) approach the business.See how they have objectives, and discipline themselves for thier goals. really he hasn't got a clue and ripping off associates & band members ain't gonna get him anywhere. One more thing, it's lonely in a New city, new country - he needs to get out. And if Hole appear to be his current guardians then so be it. Who are we to choose his friends?

At the south by southwest music conference, I had to babysit a panel on electronic gizmos. Half of the time spent on showing off the email feature on portable phones. Boring for me, but it caught my attention later as I was watching the band and happened to see some guy in front of me playing with his phone. I cringed when I read him typing, "this is the ugliest and most overrated band this past year."

Mr. internet cell phone soon disappeared from the crowd of mute witnesses.

A handful of people were getting into it, and I'm not sure how Geoff Travis, who was spotted floating around on the stairway getting an eagle eye view of the carnage that was taking place, but he shouldn't worry too much.

The crowd at the Iron Cactus was packed in. Many were left outside to peer in through the large windows and see the backs of the heads of what they were denied. It's not able to hold hundreds of people, so the ones that got in were the requisite group who has heard "all the buzz" and subsequently are too cool for the room.

The band did look like the leathered up incarnate of the Smiths. A guitar player with a dark head of coiffed hair and a hollow bodied electric playing riffs for a crooner flailing around the stage.

But it wasn't a pale imitation.

The band has some decent qualities: lots of energy, passion for what they do, good songs, but they are hindered by lacking that certain substance that makes them absolutely unique. The instrumental melody being the key factor. There are hundreds of bands doing the pulsating "indie" guitar rock sound, this one being more related to one of the 60's bands heard in the Animal House soundtrack than the others, but it's still undeniable.

At least if they are being compared to the Smiths, they aren't as annoying as Suede or sound exactly like the Smoking Popes. Their energy is more punk in nature. It could be argued that any Velvet Underground comparisons should be pointed more at the vocalist who does a Lou Reed quality of delivering his vocals off-center before he launches into his Morrissey croon for the chorus.

The $5 I spent on their low-fi 3 song CD was good money, as the melodies are interesting and energetic. It gives the listener a good chance to desiminate what is happening musically without having drunk people elbowing you in the gut to give their newly arrived friend a "ciao, baby!" kiss on the cheek.
