Tommy writes:

Article by Jim Farber, Music Critic, for New York City Tri-State Daily News (Feb. 11), titled "Life Stinks, Then You Sing About It" where he reviews the new record by Dan Bryk titled "Lovers Leap". The third paragraph in, Jim Farber lays one on Morrissey.

Life Stinks, Then You Sing About It
Dorky Dan Bryk's hard-luck licks

Excerpt:
...All of which makes writers like Dan Bryk that much more valuable and rare. He writes from the kind of wretched but funny point of view normally associated with frustrated female songwriters. Unless, of course, it comes from artists who are beyond gender, like Morrissey — who's also beyond help...

well this might be cheating since it was I who sent this story in, BUT I still have to ask: who in God's name is Dan Bryk,Byrk,Brickhead whatever his name is, and how can he even be mentioned in the same sentence as Our Morrissey????
Also, that moron so-called music critic at-small Jim Farber was right......MORRISSEY IS BEYOND HELP....He doesn't need help, he's already the greatest ever.
    Thanks.

I don't know much about this Dan Bryk, but I played him on the silly radio show me and my friends do at school. THe song was called fingers, and it wasn't too bad. I liked, i thought it was funny. I didn't exactly know what it was about though. My first thought was masturbation, and i don't know why that equals humor to me. But this absurd statement should be attributed compeletely to the music critic. I'm sure people can figure that out, but i wrote this crap anyway. Whoops.

I don't know if this is a relevant comment or merely thinly veiled self-promotion, but the band I am in (Mannequin) played a show with Dan Bryk at the Knitting Factory in NYC. I thought he was a good songwriter as well as a competent singer and piano player. He reminded me of Rufus Wainwright somewhat.

And despite the content of his songs, a warmer, kinder soul you will never meet.

Since it is Saturday night and I have made the shocking revelation that sobriety can be good, I decided to engage in more of my nonsensicial ramblings: What is so important to note about this article is that most people are interpreting the association of Morrissey's songwriting with that of 'frustrated female songwriters' as a negative criticism. After analyzing this article I am not so sure that the author is taking a jab at our nearest and dearest. There is certainly an ironic flavor to his statement that Morrissey is 'beyond help' which is more likely to convey the idea that Morrissey's songwriting does not contain the same 'Pheonix rising from the flame' motif that is present in the lyrics of such songwriters as Joni Mitchell, Liz Phair or whom ever else you want to include in this list excluding Jewel, who should be banned according to laws prohibiting bad taste and extreme cavity inducing sweetness. Now I could interpret the author's comments about 'frustrated female singers' as misogynistic but I rarely waste my time on rock critics and journalists (although they tend to puncture the ego of many a pop icon and adoring fan) and I would rather reiterate that the fact that people who think comparing Morrissey to 'one of the girls' is the highest form of degradation are making a much more profound and disturbing statement and one with far more negative consequences than they dribble spurting out of any rock journalist's right hand. In addition, I agree with the author that Morrissey's songwriting, especially during his time in the Smiths is in essence 'genderless' which is both unique and empowering for male and female listeners alike. However I would never miss an opportunity to shout, "Get your tits out Mozzy!"
