"Diari de Tarragona" apologizes for fake interview
posted by davidt on Thursday February 08 2001, @10:00AM

German Hurtado sends word that the paper "Diari de Tarragona" has issued an apology to its readers and Morrissey for the previously mentioned fake interview (now removed, published on Feb. 2) after his writing of protest. Apparently the journalist fell victim to a fraudulent contact number and impostor over the telephone. The paper goes on to thank a reader for helping in the investigations (the original story submitter, German Hurtado).

At least they had some decency left and apoligized.
The explanation given is somewhat funny though.

If you ask me, this is not just a hoax and is somewhat scary. This person:

          1. Records a fake Morrissey song (or so we think)

          2. Puts out a fake explanation of the song.

          3. Calls up jouranlists posing as Morrissey.

Granted, I'm assuming this was all done by the same person, but it seems likely. Why are they doing this? I hope this is not another Mark David Chapman. This paper has an absolute obligation to work with the authorities to find this person, because at this point it sounds like it could be more than someone "just having fun."
