REM website says "No Brit Awards"

Regarding last week's item, "REM approached to duet with Morrissey at Brit Awards - NME", mattorefice@smurfs.com writes:

The R.E.M. website says this now:
01.22.01
BRIT AWARDS? NOT THIS TIME!
In order to clear up any potential confusion, remhq would like to report that R.E.M. has no plans to attend or perform at the upcoming Brit Awards, as was speculated in an article on NME.com last week (January 19th). Who knows how these types of misinformation get started?

In other news, the band has just returned from a two week stay in South America, where they performed at Rock in Rio before a record crowd of 190,000 and Campo De Polo in Buenos Aires."

I see that NME.com has now pulled the "exclusive" story from their site without any explanation, a bit of revisionism on their part. I got the text of the original story from the R.E.M. site, Murmurs.com.

REM has always been an overrated group. And Michael Stipe has been aping Morrissey-Moves for a very long time. (Of their entire catalogue, I can only think of three mildly listenable tunes...and one is a remake!). So no, bad idea.

did you like my story about your REM report being crap? Sadly, it was better written, more logical, and more based on reality than YOUR exclusive story, and this is poor little twit me sitting thousands of miles away and without any journalism credentials or a single telephone number of any of the bozos you could have easily called up to see if there was any truth to the story.

I see that you are basing your readership on people that even can't read past the headline.

I think you're starting to read like the Sun.

Look, it would be nice if these stories would be checked up before they are posted on the web site It's pretty low of Suzanne to do this, but to actually believe her in the first place, well... it just seems that 99% of the stuff I read on Morrissey-solo isn't true. I guess the only way of totally making sure it's correct is to get the man himself to have some input. Not likely, but a bit of quality control wouldn't go a miss. Fankyou. Oh yeah, Suzanne, you are obviously very gifted, I've read bits of your website and some of your other comments, but what did you get out of this story? Is it some sort of power thing or something? C'mon, use your obvious talents for something else apart from making stories up about Morrissey. It's not big and certainly not clever. Hmph. Voila.
