Morrissey is #31 on the MTV "Hips, Lips, and Gender-benders" countdown

thegirlracer writes: Morrissey made #31 on this MTV countdown about gender-bending and sexuality for "proclaiming his celibacy." It featured several beautiful clips of him talking about his "non-sexuality" and even mentioned his maniacal fans. It featured clips from both the "Alma Matters" and "Tomorrow" videos.

Earl Graphite also writes: On Saturday January 13, 2001, MTV aired a show called "Hips, Lips, and Gender-Benders" at 1PM E.S.T. The hour long show was a countdown of the 40 top artists/videos who have sparked controversy with a combination of music and sex. Morrissey was #31 on the list. Billed as the first artist in an industry overrun with sex to proclaim celibacy. As we all know, MTV tends to rerun its shows over and over and over and over, so if you missed it, check it out!

It will be on again tonight, at 8 PM Central.

The video clips of Morrissey being interviewed are from 1992, I wish we could see something more new. Is he still celibate? Sometimes, it doesn't seem that way. It's kind of old news, but this is a retrospective show, after all. And while it was great to see Morrissey on TV, and the amusing insight that "the only thing worse than talking about sex is talking about not having sex", it is kind of annoying when the MTV staffers chortle and dismiss Morrissey's celibacy talk as "a movement that never caught on". I don't think he was ever out to start a movement.

I think Morrissey should be up there for anyone can put on a lot of make-up and claim to promote some kind of sexual revolution - but declaring the opposite was very special and brave.

There is something very wrong about including Morrissey on this list. MTV could never, by its very nature, feature Morrissey in a non-insidious way.

Boy George (with his retarded sidekick), Madonna, all other rockers who are so "controversial" sexually, why do they come across so conventional in their interviews, in their lyrics, in their opinions? These people and 99% of all rockers are completely a part of the industry and industry itself. There is nothing remotely unsettling about them. Their "deviancy" is completely predictable and welcome. They play at things like Band-Aid and Live-Aid. Morrissey's true colors, true wisdom, are nowhere clearer than in his opposition to these events.

Morrissey has a mind of his own.

I find MTV repulsive, boring and wholly conservative and I could not stand to watch it for more than 30 seconds.

I could not agree with you more. Mr. Morrissey's views were crooned unto my ears when i was but 8 years old upon the release of their first album, and my perspectives regarding sexuality have reflected his lyrical insights ever since. MTV (it hurts to even type the letters) has always adorned itselfe abnoxiously with superficial themas, marketable contradictions, and in my humble opinion, is perhaps the greatest contributing force to the sensationalisation of sexuality and the poisoning of an era which cries desperately for a voice of reason and wisdom. His voice is there, full force, and it only makes sense that he made not the top ten of their pathetic little list. As an endnote, i once read an interview with the man himselfe, where he was asked if he was still "celibate." His response seemed rather irritated, and he stated, "I'm sick of addressing this issue. Look up the word 'celibate' in the dictionary. It means that one 'will never marry'." Hmmmm...

Still, the whole purpose of that media shithole is to brainwash the kids today, I, being 18, am one of those people who was being raised to see the demise of some of the good music being in the spotlight - Tori Amos, Radiohead, Nine Inch, Depeche, Weezer, and others, and if not the best then at least some people with substance - but now it is all money, all style - no one on MTV right now comes close to Morrissey's poetics! The words just have to go right with the image, not the image going right with the words(as with Moz). And the sad truth is, the majority jerks off to this everyday, buzzing their heads into pop dredge, spawned on MTV and creeping on radios in the offices, cars, Taco Bells and restaurants everyday in a musically putrid America. Maybe Moz could write about some of that in his new album, if it is worth his attention at all...

The only reason I kept the tv on after the Moz segment was to see who MTV had the audacity to rank above him. I think that by including Moz in the countdown, MTV was trying to throw a little something to people (like us) with taste and intelligence. However, they succeeded only in making foppish generalizations on important topics like sexuality and individuality.

I wish that MTV would stop trying to pretend that they have any amount of musical integrity left and simply accept the fact that they pander to a a contrived audience that they, themselves, have constructed out of the mire of post-pop modernism and happy meals. They'd best stick with Britney, Madonna (who is a musical thief), and N'Sync....the facade has worn thin.

This is incredibly rediculious. A revolution is not started in pre meditation, it simply begins to happen.
