Morrissey as store muzak???

Today 09/01/01 as I walked around Allied Carpets (UK retailer) I heard "...I still don't belong to anyone..." ~ I instantly recognised this as "I Am Hated For Loving."

It was sang by a male with a weak (not very good) voice. And although the volume was quite low I was certain the backing music WAS the boys. The fade out harmonies of Alain White were unmistakable. The next track was by REM so i believe it was a stab at Store Muzak respectability.

I approached a male assistant and asked about the music , he pointed me in the direction of the manager and added that the music was "sad." I thought his carpets were sad, but held back as I didn't want to offend him after all I was about to ask his manager for the tape! His manager made me wait whilst he finished his phone call and then declined my request as it was the property of Allied carpets.

I had hope to post it on Napster for those interested in how Morrissey's song should not be sung (although I am probably guilty of this!).

I don't have any other information on this but if someone has, or if anyone has had a similar tale, add a comment.

When I used to work at Northline Mall back in 1997, they played Everyday is Like Sunday every once in a while. It was Morrissey, not an imposter. The first time I heard it played there, is was, in fact, a Sunday.

If anyone is really interested, McDonald's in Balham, South London used to play 'Dagenham Dave' on a continuous compilation loop, while the local clientele sunk their eye teeth into their 'Meat Is Murder', Big Mac burgers! Curiously, the main protagonist of the song has 'a mouth full of pie', presumably of the Steak&Kidney variety. I'm quite certain Morrissey saw this song as the perfect musical accompaniment to carnivores dining in fast food restaurants. I'm sure the meat eaters in Balham would love to see Mr. Morrissey perform his music live while they masticate on dead cow, melted cheese slices and tomato ketchup! The bus from Bath to Balham, via Los Angeles only takes five hours! Who says, big fat glutinous Amercian corporations don't have a sense of irony? Eh!
