In the February 2001 issue there is a list of the 100 singles that changed your life. "This Charming Man" is listed at #10. It says:
The Smiths didn't fall out of a clear blue pop sky~ groups like Orange Juice had engaged in similarly fet janglepop. But there was something about Morrissey ~ cavorting louchely on totp in a big, pyjama like shirt, idly brandishing a brunch of gladioli like a weapon, his vocals deliberately plummy and prominent in the mix.
That Thursday evening when Manchester's feyest first appeared on totp would be a unexpected pivotal cultural event in the lives of a million English boys. His very English camp glumness against the gaudiness of the eighties new pop world, as exemplified by Culture Club and their ilk. The Smiths' subject matter may have been "squalid" but there was a purity of purpose about them that you messed with at your peril.
The top twenty is as follows:

It brings sparkles in my eyes to know that "This Charming Man", its finally regarded as one of the best singles of all time, and to all us whose hearts have been pierced by The Smiths, know that its long waited justice in our skin.

The song its beautiful, and it not only represents a magical moment, but the birth of the greatest record of a decade.

        1. This Charming Man

        Best single of the 90's

For me the track that changed my (musical) life was 'Shoplifters of the World, Unite' which came out when I was 13. Down came all the lame posters I had on my walls and up went posters of this man with a big quiff and a great knack for witty one liners.

There can't be too many occasions when songs like that come along. I imagine all the songs in the top 20 list would have affected someone else somewhere in a similar manner.

Ahhh.. sweet memories.. Those that know me well will already know about the two defining emotional moments concering the Smiths which affected me, and my life from then to now.... 'What Difference Does It Make' on Top of the Pops.. just so draw droppingly different from the general morass of appalling 80's musical mediocrity at that time.. and then came 'Hand In Glove' and 'Handsome Devil' heard on a cassette from a friend in my car on the way to play football one cold Sunday morning in 1982 (or thereabouts).. I had a great game!

It touched me then and still touches me today.. Sorry if this sounds a bit self indulgent!
