The Toronto Sun, December 26, 2000
THE TOP SHOWS OF YEAR 2000
KIERAN GRANT, TORONTO SUN

These top gigs of 2000 are selected in terms of sheer memorability, as well as quality.

[snip]
HAWKSLEY WORKMAN, OPENING FOR MORRISSEY, HAMILTON PLACE, FEB. 16: Crowd reaction moves from stunned to silence to open-hearted acceptance as this uncompromising Toronto songwriter swished on stage, plugged in his Telecaster, and cranked out a miniature, electric rock opera all by his lonesome. He claimed to beat Moz in a backstage ping-pong game, too.

I've heard from audience members that Hawksley's set was god-awful. I think that would stun and silence me, too.

one of the worse acts I've ever seen. Most of the audiance was talking and pissing themselves with boredom. Goes to show that the gasoline rag for your eyes, the Toronto Sun does bend the truth

I was at the concert in Hamilton and I thought that Hawksley Workman was great. In fact, i found the booing from many in attendance embarassing. Here was this young man with just his guitar and his refeshingly honest lyrics pouring his heart out for our amusement, and people booed him. I have since picked up a copy of his albumn, "For Him and the Girls" and it is the most original, well-writen and emotionally charged collection of songs that i have heard since a certain singer we all know picked up his mic and sang his life. Do yourself a favour and give it a listen.

I wasn't at the concert and don't know what kind of croud would have been there, but i've seen Hawksley perform three times without his band and he's fantastic. I recently picked up his last albumn - "(last night we were) the delicious wolves" and it's much like his first in that it grows on me the more i listen to it. Multi-layered! It's better than his first. This guy is going to be bigger than anything that's come out of Canada in a long time. No, i don't work for him. And i don't know who Morrissey-Solo is, but they should come to Winnipeg. We may only have 700000 people here, but the music scene is great. Ask Hawksley, he keeps comming back!
